Mike and AndyM: Why would you use the FEL when you could back over the auger with the 3PH and use it to lift the auger? You could chain around the auger, then attach the chain to the PHD's yoke or to a flat drawbar if you have one. My 3PH has much more lift power than the FEL. ...just my thoughts. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bob Rhino make a gear drive reversable PHD and a few other companies do as well. Most of thm have 2 ring gears facing each others teeth and a swinging pinion gear from the pto shaft will engage one set or the other to make it work. some do wear out quicker from bieng used alot. I have a freind that had one he ran a 28 inch auger on behind a 135 HP tractor with out a slip clutch it failed after 2 years of diggin in rocky soil but it was an undersized PHD with an over sized auger at one end and a tracto 100 HP over the phds rating in limestone country lol.

My heavy duty JD post hole digger gets very limited use because of the number of times i've hung it up on rocks and roots and had to break out the backhoe to get it out. As far as getting yours out. I think the 3pt hitch to lift it is best. Get it spinning if you can, if not turn it in reverse a little with a pipe wrench and try to free it.
Let us know how it turns out

A pipe wrench in the FEL bucket is standard equipment when I try to drill holes in this red Georgia clay with my PHD. Sometimes I'm just not quick enough to cut the PTO power or raise the three point when it goes to digging too far or too fast.

I carry a piece of cold rolled 1/2" axle about 2 foot long when I'm digging holes here in the Ga clay....I undo the PTO shaft and one of the 3 pt arms, slip the rod into the u joint in the PTO shaft and back the auger out of the hole...with the coarse thread on the auger, it backs out fairly rapidly.

As far as adding water to the hole, most of the times I stick the auger is when I am drilling holes along the creek, or by the lakeshore....seem like the water sets up a suction that won't let the auger come outta the hole, you'd think the soft ground wouldn't be any problem /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

here's a picture of the auger in the hole just now...
We had about 1" of rain this morning so it filled the holes up with water.... Let the fun begin..

BTW, I did try the chain as you can see in the pic, but the loader wouldn't lift it and I didn't want to rip the auger or the tractor up by putting full power to it.

here's a pic of the shear pin in the collar. The small(5/16) hole is where the pin was. It took a good bit of work to get it out. We had to line the hole up with the shear pin in the shaft after it took about 30min to find it. Between the grease and rust ...argh!!!/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Oh well... on to the next project....

Work with the tools you got...After replacing the shearbolt, just put a prybar in the driveshaft yoke and screw the auger out of the hole. Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey.
