One way to get an engine started on a cold morning

I will find the link for this but it's not only remotely possible it happens quite often. Now I'm not talking about a big tractor engine. I'm talking about these little 5 and 8 hp motors. And yes I also know it is possible to do it because I did do it on my grandfather's 8 hp B&S snow blower three years ago. It was 10 below out and we had gotten a foot of snow the night before Christmas. We went out to snow blow and couldn't get it started. My brother said boil some water and pour over it. We did and cracked the block right there.

You don't want the sudden temp change on a diesel injector pump. Bad news. Would probably want to let temps equalize on the head, etc as well - close tolerances can bind up if you get one part 200 degrees hotter than the part that should slide next to it.

Either can be neccessary, but is always bad for a diesel engine. The less you use, the better. Gas engines are more tolerant.

Here in southern MN, the bucket of hot water _under_ the oilpan with a tarp over the top works much better. Go have a cup of coffee, come back, & it will be easier to start.

The water doesn't have to be boiling,warm water is all I ever used,I imagine tap water from the cold faucet would work as long as it is above freezing.Isn't that funny how stuff happens...you happen to be one of the only other ones on this forum that ever tried this and you just happen to have this happen on Christmas day 3 years back and here it is Christmas day when we are talking about it again( bet you never dreamed 3 years ago you would be telling of your experience 3 years later to the day) , thats funny the timing of things that happen /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Evidently you forgot to mention cracking the block on the snowblower in your earlier post in this thread or I am sure you would have told us then what had happened .Had you and your brother heard of others trying this or did you just happen to think of trying this when you were trying to start the snowblower? I really am interested in seeing the links you refer to of this as "happeniing quite often" Is it on this forum ??
