Online Banking Anyone?

Another vote for USAA. My kids joined too. Everything is online. I have an account at a brick-and-mortar bank, it is handy a couple times a year. USAA also refunds the rapacious ATM fees charged by other banks, with some limitations.

Talk more about the ATM fees. The one thing that keeps me using a local bank is the ATM fees. There are only two ATM's within a half hour of me so I don't have much choice.

As I understand it, USAA does not charge you ATM fees on up to 10 withdrawals per month. Also, they reimburse you for other banks ATM fees up to $15 per month. For me, that means no fees because I don't have a lot of ATM transactions. In the overall scheme of things it is not that much money, but it irks me no end to have banks charge say a 3% transaction fee for the ATM withdrawal. Of course many folks get cash back at the grocery counter, which is an easy way to bypass the bank ATM fees.

I've never used an ATM and don't have a card... too many problems with skimmers and people getting robbed... at least the way it is many places around town.

I haven't been inside our financial instituion but maybe 6 times in the past 25 years. Everything is done via ATM or on-line home banking. Our debit card is tied to our checking account, but we use it as a credit card, not a debit card. I withdraw $100 about 3-4 times per year, as I don't need much cash ever.

I also use a shielded wallet to save me from clandestine readers, plenty available on ebay.

USAA is the best online banking for military eligible depositors; active, reserve, retired, DOD civilian, and their families. Full banking, investments, insurance, credit cards, and mortgage. Every thing on line including mortgage. I was skeptical till I got into it. Only way to go. Insurance rebates each year depending on cash flow. I have not been able to beat their rates on anything. CC less than 10% interest.

They now do DOD civilian??

Around here, my EFTPOS card (savings account) and Credit Card are one and the same... you just pick an account that the money is 'drawn' from. My PIN is simply for the card itself and "tap'n'go" on the card reader is for under A$100 transactions on the credit side of things = very handy when purchasing petrol/distillate.

I haven't had a chequing account in over 22 years, there's just no longer a need for one, for me.

Oh, and I've used that same single card in ATMs in the USA & Canada with no problems whatsoever.

It would be nice but in this area property management still requires banking as some pay in cash...

One 5 bedroom home is rented to 5 students... it's been OK the last 4 years... but the rent is combo of money orders, check and cash... as each puts in their share.

Still use checks too... it has saved me a few times as in when a tenant claimed they did not receive their deposit upon leaving... simply present them with a copy of the cancelled check... one was really ugly as the husband and wife were separating... she kept all the money and told him I didn't refund it.

There was an issue with the DMV where two car registrations were delinquent with penalties of 25% plus interest and a threat to turn over to the State Tax collector.

Again, my cancelled check saved the day... the official reason is there was a glitch and about 30 renewals didn't post and I wrote a check, properly identified for two vehicles that both renew on the same day...
