When welding (any discipline), if the parent material don't show heat discoloration, the weld has not penetrated to the extent where there is proper penetration and adhesion of the parent metal and filler rod.. How it works, MIG is quick and not so dirty (less post weld cleanup so long as the proper procedure is followed and the wire is of good quality), but while a 'glue gun' don't take a ton of skill to weld with properly, it still takes some skill to achieve a proper weld. Pretty don't count, sound does.
