I saw this on another message board and at first was a bit skeptical. After talking with a friend who not too long ago got his pilots license I believe it is an authentic photo. He said that he read a detailed NTSB report on it in one of his aviation magazines./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

This photo is an actual midair accident that occured in December at the Plant City, Florida, Municipal Airport that occured when the pilot of the Piper (the top plane) neglected to notice the Cessna in a pattern for Touch and Go's. The biggest horror? The Cessna was carrying an Instructor and a student - the student was practicing Touch n Go's. No one was injured. And in even better news, the Student recently passed her checkride (Yes, she actually DID get in a plane again after that!) and is a real pilot now. The pilot of the Piper... unknown.

Only accident listed for plant city involved a cow. Think someone's pulling your leg.

NTSB Identification: ATL01LA016 . The docket is stored in the (offline) NTSB Imaging System.

Accident occurred Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at PLANT CITY, FL
Aircraft:Cessna 182A, registration: N6300B
Injuries: 1 Uninjured.
While enroute to Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, Florida, for the purpose of having the primer line repaired, the engine lost power and quit. The pilot initiated a forced landing to a field five miles northwest of Lakeland Airport. The airplane collided with a cow in the pasture during the landing roll. Examination of the airplane disclosed that the mixture cable was disconnected at the carburetor, and the mixture lever was in the lean position. The annual inspection was completed 162 flight hours before the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident/incident as follows.

The loss of engine power due to fuel starvation resulting from the separation of the mixture control cable from the carburetor. Factors were cows, rough and uneven terrain.

I sent an email to him to verify it. I'll smack him if he was giving me the business. I didn't realize there was a site where I could look it up myself.

Hey Mike,

I also couldn't find any reference on this at the NTSB site. However, when I did a search on Plant City Midair I got a lot of hits. Here's one of them.

That sure looks like the same two planes from a different angle to me...even down to the right side door on the top plane standing open.

Happens quite a lot but pilots often don't walk away from it.

Has been 2 incidents recently here of that. Some walked away but some died.

Not pretty........................

Funny, that's the last thing the guy that verified the pictures authenticity said to me. I didn't really think anything of it but now I guess I'm missing something. Can you elaborate?/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

That used to be the advertising catch phrase of United Airlines several years ago...like "Where's the beef...??"
