Well seems like I always play ketchup in this thread, so instead of quoting I will just address some of the posts and if the shoe fits then you know its yours.

I like the .357 in a pistol, but not sure in a rifle as it not the most accurate of rds and has consider drop beyond 50 m or so. I do see the value of have it and a pistol together. Guess I would just need some shooting time in a rifle format to make the call. I do have a Ruger Ranch rifle and its def a sweet little gun.

.243, WOW, maybe one of the most overlooked rds out there, I call it the 'why NOT' rd. Its been around since the 50's, its ballistics are impressive to say the least and I have often wondered WHY Stoner or whoever was looking at a smaller than 7.62 for the military they did not just take COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) .243. It certainly brings far more to the table than the 5.56 and has all the benefits to boot along with 500m range something the 5.56 lacks. Then of course there is the one MAJOR factor it brings to the table in my eyes as a professional combat arms soldier...STOPPING POWER!

Yea about the only time we are not full of poo is when you get the colonoscopy, which I just had. They have a new drug out they use. It knocks you out and then when the doc finishes they hit you with a reversal and bingo, you are wide awake, less than 30 min after they knocked you out, none of that laying around the hospitial for 4+ hrs then waking up into a fog for most of the day.

As for lever actions, they are in the dust bin of the gun world, yet got to be one of the best solutions to a rifle I know and about as close as you can get to a semi auto and not be classified as one: Westlich von Santa Fe - Nacht ohne Schlaf (Westernserie) - YouTube

45-70, a howitzer of a gun with a kick like a mean mule but it will drop a T Rex if get close enough, its ballistics are quite impressive for lead slug that could be a car battery.

Free lunch: Been around for 70 some odd years and trust me that free lunch comes with a big bill, when anyone tells me free and is trying to sell me something, they just lost a sale.

Gay marriage...not sure how the thread migrated from Open carry to gay marriage, maybe gay marriage is open carry? Anyhow, I had a couple of guys I did business with and I liked both of them, professional, conservative and great folks. One day over lunch, they sprung it on me, they were gay, and he said they were married. Will I was dumbfounded and said but the govt does not allow gay marriage. Now these guys are as conservative as I am...and he says, why does the govt manage marriage? Should you not marry who or what your heart wants? I thought on that and was talking with my Dad about it, who said this: Son, I remember all those years you worked starting at age 10, saving your money and in your Senior year of HS at Christmas you bought a new Corvette, your first car. I told your mama, you'd probably marry that car if you could. Then it dawned on me, do I really care if you want to marry Bruce, your Bass-boat or the blender in the kitchen, do I care and is it any of my business...no and no! I sure got bigger fish to fry in life that dwelling on someone's choice in a mate is any of my concern.

Guess I am up todate in this thread, just not sure why I only get a e mail every few weeks and by then I am 30 or 40 replies behind...

My cousin who is my age is gay. He married a lady as a young man and had kids. Then decided he couldn't live like that. Divorced and now has been with his current partner for over 30 years. I love him and his partner. Great guys. He doesn't believe in "Gay Marriage". He believes in the Biblical interpretation of the term. He says our laws already have guidelines that provide financial protection for him and his partner. No need for a "Marriage License".

P.S. He doesn't care who you choose as a mate either. :D

P.S.S. Seeing someone publicly carrying a weapon gives me no pause. I have no plans to put them in a situation where they are forced to use said weapon. :)

I stumbled on this thread and opened it because of the title.
The last couple of posts show that it has WANDERED from the title.

Back to the topic of the title;
In SOME States it is VERY illegal to carry a loaded firearm while on an off road vehicle; golf cart, ATV, tractor, etc.

Also, I doubt the utility of a "defense" firearm at long range, i.e. I think a lawyer might find it difficult to defend someone who shoots an "intruder" (trespasser ?) at 100 yards or more.
I don't see that as an immediate threat, unless they have a gun pointed at you, in which case shooting at them turns a threat into a gun fight - the outcome being likely to turn on reflexes and luck.
(eye sight, visibility, relative positions, etc.)

SO MANY choices of ammunition, everything from small shot for birds, snakes and squirrels to 1 oz sugs for mercifully putting down LARGE animals if/when the need arises.

True our worlds differ. NY is very liberal and folks tend to mind their neighbors business as opposed to their own. Open carry likely results in police contact. Even long gun in a rear window rack is an issue outside of hunting season, Be greatful for the freedoms in your community, and know those freedoms are not guaranteed everywhere.

I have kept a firearm close at hand ever since the fateful day in the hayfield when I cliped all 4 legs off of a cat hiding in the grass when I was mowing with the sickle mower. The screams ans squalls it made, and I had no easy humain way to dispach the poor creature. I currently carry a .22 with me every time I so much as head to the barn, am out on the tractor, or ATV. Often find coons and possum just inside the barn door at the cat food dish, where my small children feed the cats.

Yes, I carry a gun. I also carry a Leatherman, mini mag flashlight, pocket knife, pen and sharpie marker. (There's more junk in my pockets too, but I'll stop the list there) It my way of living my motto (unknowingly shared with the US Coast Guard) of Semper Paratus, Latin for "Always Prepaired". I'm not another soap-box standing 2A gun nut, just a guy who carries tools that help me out when needed.

Heartless though it may sound the kindest thing you could have done FOR that cat would have been to park a wheel on it.
Not saying I would have had the presence of mind to actually DO that, this is strictly 20/20 hindsight.

Very well stated.

Yes very well said.
Another something to be thankful of.
And Merry Christmas.
(If not for the commerce of Christmas most would be reminded that the 12 days of Christmas come after the 25th and end Jan 6, Epiphany)

I agree, in hindsight, there are many things I could have done to have made the time the poor animal suffered shorter... none of which my poor panicking brain could fathom at that point in time. It was a horrible day I still remember vividly, even 10 years later.

My two older boys got .22's for Christmas this year. The oldest (17) has been wanting a revolver, he got a Heritage Arms Rough Rider, and the middle boy (9) got a Rossi .22/.410 combo just like his big brother got years ago. I was pleased to find a nice used one at the local gun shop for reasonable cost, as they stopped making them, and they are nice little guns. We spent some time putting holes in pop cans before dinner, which we all enjoyed, starting with the standard safety refresher of safe handling, checking, loading/unloading, and trigger finger placement awareness at all times. Boys did great, I'm afraid they might be a better shot than me.

Hope every one had a great Christmas...
