open up Hydraulic cylinder on Massey M 2375

I must be missing which part is the "gland". Would this include the threaded column portion or do you mean between the threaded column and the rod? If the second, what can you use to push is such a thin piece without damaging the rod?

Push the threaded piece back if you can. The rod has to go with it if it's at the end of stroke. You probably have to push it in an inch or 2. Of course, you can take it to a cylinder repair shop instead.

Use a scrap piece of alum or brass to strike it with hammer straight in. Don’t ding the rod, the softer alum or brass will not damage the gland if you hit it straight in.
