Tractor: L3940 HST-3 with 55 hrs on it.

There is no recommendation in the owner's manual concerning rpm settings for operation. I have tended to the low side for the first 50 hrs, keeping about 2100 rpms for loader work, and 2500 rpms for rotary cutting.

Also, when I start the tractor up, I have the throttle level set at idle, and I leave it there for a full 5 minute warm up.

I idle my Deere 4400 at about 1500 RPM...
For PTO work, it's at PTO RPM (that'll be marked on your tachometer).
For most other work, the throttle is set at 1500-2000 RPM and I use the foot throttle as required.
As far as warm up...again, idle set at about 1500 RPM and about 5 minutes or so. No real work done until the temperature gage reads at normal operating temperature.

My L4200 manual says to start the tractor at idle, then rev up to PTO speed to warm up. Personally, I don't do that. I do rev it up a little, maybe to ~1500 for minute or two if I want to warm it up. I usually run ~2000-2100 RPM for most work, but tach it up to full blast for running my backhoe or snowblower.

I've got a smaller utility tractor (B3030, 4 cylinder) and start at idle then advance to about 1200 RPM for the warm-up.

90% of my work (grading, back hoeing, FEL work) is done between 1200 and 1600 RPM. Running the bush hog, I run the RPM's between 1800 and 2200 but seldom at PTO speed, I just don't need that much power.

Close to what Roy does with a little difference as he runs geared and I run HST on my 5030, but just like him on our geared M8640.

My Operator Manual states to set throttle half way which is about 1500 and let it warm up. I run about 2550 for PTO as per manual and what works well for everything else.

It's better for the engine to run it at higher speeds. I realize this is contrary to the natural sense of things, but be warned, doing "work" at lower RPM's is the worst way to run a diesel. You should tend to run it faster than feels right to you.
