Operator\'s manual

A lot of the questions asked on this forum could be answered by Power-trac if they provided an operator's manual. Has anyone had the opportunity to ask why they choose not to. It just seems to me that sooner or later someone could suffer a needless preventable injury because of this.

Re: Operator\'s manual

PT is not much on writing. I wonder if we could write one here. We could suggest sections and have the experts on this site write sections and then send in for comments. This is a do it yourself group, let's do it our selves. The combined knowlege on this site is fantastic. It not well organizied as yet.
I would also like to see a list with descriptions of uses and tips. We might have a section on each attachments. A friend locked up the bearing on his brush cutter because he did not know about the not to easy to see grease fitting. No documentation what so ever came with this (or any other as far as I know) attachment.

Re: Operator\'s manual

There's a grease fitting on the brush cutter? Which model? I looked all around and couldn't find one for my brush cutter that fits the 422. Is it there?

I am thinking that an owners manual written here would be a good thing. Some things could be added that PT wouldn't include, i.e. reversing the stump grinder rotation. I had asked Scott about it early on and he seemed surprised that anyone would want it to fling debris away from the operator. I can't imagine having those chips and rocks being rocketed back at me! I heard the reason of "...the grinder pulling itself into the stump...". Mine does that, when I start my grind from the opposite side of the stump. But I've found little or no difference in which side I start my grind from, it works great both ways. I grind side to side, front to back then back to the front.

Re: Operator\'s manual

There is on mine for the 422. It's about 1 inch off center to the right and in front of the main shaft. I have attached a photo, but you can barely see it for the grease. If this does not help I will take another picture.

Re: Operator\'s manual

Hmmm.... mine doesn't look anything like that. The hydraulic motor sits directly on the deck, and underneath there's a huge drum that has the two blades attached.

Re: Operator\'s manual

PT changes things all of the time. I would call them and ask if there is a grease fitting. With any luck they have put a life lubed bearing or maybe the hydraulic motor front bearing is used for the blades. This is the way my stump grinder works. Of course yours may be different.

Re: Operator\'s manual

You know if each one is different this could make it difficult to write the manuals. Still they would be of some help.

Re: Operator\'s manual

I am sure you are right. The engineer in me wants more organization, but the search function makes that unnecessary.

Re: Operator\'s manual

I got to look at the manual for the first time this evening with the delivery of my PT425. I knew folks didn't think much of PT's documentation but sheesh! I was still disappointed. Its really nothing much more than an incomplete parts list.

Re: Operator\'s manual

Perhaps PT thinks: that their machines are so simple, and that most PT owners are so smart, that little documentation is needed! Obviously they are wrong on both counts!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
