The fireplace is called a Rumsford I think, someone else has it as Rumford. A search will probably turn it up by either version.

Never built one myself but did a _lot_ of research back when. Building one is not a DIY project unless you are an accomplished mason to beging with. From the hearth on up to at least the breast every row of brick is sloped and that slope changes several times. Lots, and I do mean _lots_ of trimming brick.

Efficiency - worst possible way to heat a room other than building a fire in an open pit in the floor. They are efficient in only one way - getting rid of wood. Even when they are out with the damper shut, they are leaking air up the chimney (unless you stuff a chunk of insulation up there).

Atmosphere - yep, that is where a fireplace shines, A jug of wine, bearskin rug, fire and thou!

Boy isn't that the truth. When our old fireplace up at Tahoe had the old rock chimney removed by tons of snow, it was the best thing that could have happened. We put in a great "Regency" brand fireplace system. Unbelievable results.

Here's a pic of my fireplace my father built for me 17 years ago. I built it for an ornament not for heat. My father was a bricklayer for 40+ years.

Afternoon Steve,
That is one beautiful fireplace ! Your Dad did a beautiful job ! Its just pleasant to look at, especially the arched opening ! I will try and get a shot of mine tonite, mine is also arched and has a wood storage compartment next to it that my wife loads with junk ! ;) :) A few years back I installed a gas stove insert in the fireplace opening and it throws great heat especially with the blower.

Good Evening Guys,
This is the fireplace in the Ct home, the insert is a Waterford Emerald. I have it hooked up to a thermostat, and with these temps it runs quite a bit ;) The second shot is the top side of the interior brick running to the ceiling. I really need to modify the top piece of the insert to conform with the brick arch, which unfortuantely is mostly covered right now :( The wood box is to the right and I made the doors to cover all the junk that my wife has in there ;) :)

Broke the glass last week. Had a new piece cut and other then that day, its been burning non stop since Dec 31. Of course, on the warmer days it was turned way down to a couple of coals hot enough to get things going in the evening. Having the ash pan and ash door on the bottom allows me to "turbocharge" and re-ignite the new wood from those few coals left. It works very well. Last months gas bill was $48.
