I also would have suggested looking closely at the backhoe attach and swing points. They "appear" rather flimsy for some of the bad habits I've developed /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

From what you've posted, I would be looking for a good used full size machine too. They're out there, you just might have to use some vacation days to go and get one. The internet can be a wonderful tool sometimes machinery trader rock and dirt , etc.

I have a 24' Duel Tandem gooseneck. Two Dodge trucks a 3/4-ton and 1 ton. I have the 1-ton set up better with a 6 spd and a Jake brake. I just got the 1-ton. The 3/4-ton 4x4 with HD rear springs pulled everything I needed. From small dozers to 310g back hoe. I our part of the world you see 1 ton and 3/4 ton doing it all. Allot is for the oil patch. Look how many guys you see hauling 16 to 18 large round bales on goosenecks.
I am not telling you to go do what I do. You need to see for yourself. Brakes are the main things needed pulling a lot of weight. You will always have that 16 old girl on the cell phone slam on her brakes.
That 1-ton pulling that triple duel tandem looks OK. He has 30,000pounds of axles and a lot of brakes. Those are little tractors.

I think alot of you guys are missing the boat here.

You better make sure you know what your laws are...
Come thru Pa. or Va. and they will set you straight!
In a hurry!

It's all good untill something happens.
I got pulled in on 95 in North Carolina with a 1 ton Chevy and a 30 foot goose neck trailer and they wern't so freindly when he had said to me " do you know you are well over 28,000 lbs"

So make sure you don't get your self in trouble.

Got that right! And the fines for being over weight in NV are steep. I just regestered my 5 yard dump and GVW is self declared, in other words you pay for the weight you intend to carry OR pull. Fine, as long as you don't exceed it, and loaded trucks are always being pulled over. Expect to pay > $500 if in violation around here.

You are right you do need to now you state laws. I don't pull heavy iron out of my state. If I do it is not going to be a dozer or backhoe. I have my truck reg for 12000 GVW. I pay the price for the tag that is what my state is looking for. I have ask the state boys, state dot, State DMV and other state contractors.

How did you get past the other scales???

/ opinions on backhoe to be towed with 1 ton? #18
In California, if you are pulling with a pickup, you are not required to go through the scales. I have a Dodge dually pickup with a tandem dually trailer rated at 20K GVWR. I am required to have a class A CDL and motor carrier number, but I can go right past the scales. Ironic, but that is the way it works here. I also understand that Dodge's GCWR means something to Dodge, but not to the highway patrol. As long as I am not over weight on any axle or on any tire, then I am not overweight just because I exceed the GCWR as recommended by Dodge.

A little pickup trivia....If I remove the pickup bed and install a flatbed, then I must go through the scales. Conversely, if I put a pickup bed on a medium duty truck, that does not make it a pickup. They limit a "pickup" to 11,500 GVWR. Of course my new Dodge dually is rated at 12,200, so the fine print actually puts me back into the scales. I called our local scales and they said they don't want me pulling in with a 1 ton with a pickup bed. So it's not always real clear....

I used to tow my 110 around with my F350 Diesel pickup and a 14000lb gross tag trailer no problem. I will say though, you had better be darn sure your trailer brakes are in tip top working order or you or whoever is in front of you will not be happy. A couple of times I have towed my 161 excavator behind the pickup, a little dicey to say the least.

As far as the machines go the 48 and 110, pretty much personal preferance, the flip seat is just silly, make the thing spin already. The Yanmar 40 does look pretty good, I would definetly give that a good look, it has a very similar frame to the 110, and all the hydraulic and lifting capacites are just about the same. Also you mentioned the IR/Bobcat machines which used to be Earth Force machines, they are very interesting and seem to be available for very reasonable prices.
