I have been looking for an old M6950 or M7950 Kubota for a spare tractor. I have found an M7950 in Kentucky that is really a pretty straight old girl that has four new tires, has had the injectors gone through and had the injection pump overhauled, and is just a pretty decent old machine. It is a two wheel drive, has three remotes, and a four post canopy. The down side is, it just rolled 10,000 hours. The old Kubota dealer who has it seems to know a lot about these old girls and he volunteered a lot of info about that series. He sold this tractor new, and he put a clutch in it at about 7,000 hours. It does not have a loader, so it has been doing field work and haying it's whole life, so that is a plus. I think I can get it bought for around $7000.

Opinions please?

Update.

The dealer gave me the name and number of the man that bought it new, and I gave him a call. He said the tractor does not use a drop of oil and always fires right up even in the cold winter. He said they rebuilt the differential at 7,000 hrs when the clutch was put in because part of the parking brake came apart and did internal differential damage. He traded it in on a new M9540, and he said he hoped it was going to be as good of a tractor as the one he got rid of.

I think if it was well maintained, it should give you a lot of service. I had an old MF 85 that I did a valve job on at 14,000 hours. It had been well maintained and the bottom end didn't need a thing done to it.

10,000 hours is a good many hours in my opinion. I would give the tractor a real good look over and drive around to listen for any noises in the trans. I would also give the front end a good looking over. Anything that moves would probably be wore pretty good at that many hours. If the previous owner keep the front end greased real good it might not be in bad shape, especially since a loader was not adding extra wear to the front end.

With that being said I know where there is some MACK trucks with over 20,000 hours on them and the motor still runs good. So good mainteance goes a long way towards how long something lasts.

I purchased a tractor that had in excess of 6000 hours on it, and have had no problems with it, other than just normal stuff that breaks and wears out. Starter was dragging, had it rebuilt, two new batteries, fuel filter, new dipstick for the tranny, a few pins and a couple of front tires. Guy around the corner talks about how good the motor sounds whenever he hears it running. (Usually doing the dirt road for my sister in law, which he lives on, so he ought to appreciate it, lol) Owned by a turf farm who required the maintance be logged.

10k hours is at the cusp of needing work.. mind you.. it's had some work.

Since it had injector/pump work.. if it has also had a clutch recently.. and the oil pressure is still good. it's likely got plenty of life left.. ut 7k$ may be abit high for it. etc. imho

Thanks for all the replies.

Soundguy, I too feel that 7K is too much money. I'd like to buy it for $5,500 or so. Part of the price is what the dealer has spent on it. He said they took it in the shop, changed every filter on the thing and every drop of fluids. The put new tie rods on it, and they had the injection pump redone as well as the injectors. All of these things I'd of had to bring it home and do, so it is kind of six of one half a dozen of the other.

My biggest problem is I am in love with this series of tractor. I really like the old platform Kubota tractors. My good friend who is a NH and Kubota dealer here has a super sharp 5600 Ford with a QT Ford loader with 4100 hours on it that he'll sell me for $8000, this tractor is about an 8 on a 1-10. But I am just not a fan of those old straddle mount Fords. I know they are super tough, but I am not comfortable on them, and I am afraid my little boy might fall down between the open area between the wheel and fender on one of those Fords when he rides with me, and that I can not have.

There are a lot of real nice tractors here around home, but you can't find an old XX50 series Kubota for anything, and that is what I want.

If you're serious about this tractor, get all the service records you can lay your hands on. Also talk to the previous owner(s) to find out exactly what type of work this particular tractor has done most of its life. $7K is about the average retail price (price dealers get for a clean tractor with normal amount of hours and wear and tear). The M7950s were built between 1983-88. So your tractor is 20-25 years old and, at 10000 hours, the previious owners were averaging 400-500 hours per year.

10K hours is pretty high even with the overhaul work done on the injectors, injection pump and clutch. I would be concerned about the engine (compression, oil in water and water in oil problems) and the transmission, rear end and hydraulics. You need to check these things out closely.

I would offer $5500 and see what happens.

BTW: I'm a former Kubota owner--21 hp B7510HST with LA302 FEL. Kubota makes good stuff. Traded it in earlier this year for a 54 hp Mahindra 5525 to do some haying on my place.
