Great input all, hey don I'm in similar boat with slightly more acreage with most in vineyard so might take one click smaller with the L3540 to keep the width under 60" with R1's. If you don't mind me asking what's your pricing on the 39? FEL and box blade, filled tires r all musts I agree and sounds like unanimous here. Good luck and look forward to following your thoughts when she arrives!

Lots of good info. I'll second (third?) adding more weight in the back. The Ls are light in the back and combined with a strong loader can make life interesting. SSQA is a must as are rear remotes. Front remotes are handy (and $) for grapple or FEL mounted snow plow angling. Work lights for use at night as the headlights don't work well. Enjoy!

I own a 3940 and love it, though i would not call the tractor light. Yea with out an implement on the back and doing loader work is definetly interesting (and dangerous), the 3940 is a Grand L series is is built a heavier than the standard L series. I agree the SSQA is a must because you never know what you may want to put on the front in the future.

Yes, sure has been some great input!

I've been working on my desired configuration, so haven't gotten pricing yet - however I will let you know when I do.

The L3940 is great. Ours was bought in April of '10 and has over 280 hours on it and has worked out great for everything we need it to do. It's used everyday 365 days a year feeding round bales to cows, that's it's main job but is used with a RollaBar hay rake, moving dirt, clearing underbrush, bushhogging, cleaning concrete cattle lot, etc.

I almost got a 3940 until the dealer pointed out that the 4240 has the LA854 loader for a very small additional cost. Depends on if you want that extra capacity. You get 1878 lbs lift capacity (where they measure it, you can pick up more than this) vs 1593 lbs on the LA724 loader. The frames on the tractors are identical and they'll use about the same amount of fuel. So, as you can see from my sig, we took the bait (actually the dealer we bought from gave us a better price on a 4240 than the other local dealer quoted on a 3940, so it was a no brainer.

I looked at the L3940 and the L4240,liked them both..bought the L4240 for the extra loader capacity and heavier front end.The L3940 appears to be a fine tractor.

I just upgraded from a L4330 gst to a L4740 HSTC with no regrets. Finally getting adjusted to the hst, but with a little more seat time I will be completely sold on the hst.

The 3940 is a great tractor, as mentioned you may want to consider stepping up for more loader capacity. Either way you will be happy

I just moved up from a 3230 HST to a 4240 HSTC (w/cab).

While the 3230 HST pretty much served my needs, the hot summer and cold winter months were taking a toll on my tractor 'fun'. I also wanted more horsepower for the air conditioning, plus I could use a heavier front axle and loader for moving tree debris on my beach.

I did not realize how big a deal the new HST plus with stall guard and six speed auto shift were, but now I absolutely love it. I no longer have to keep adjusting the throttle, as everything is now automatic including shifting between high and low in whatever range you select.

I find my self now mostly leaving the throttle at idle, the range selector in mid range, with both load sensing and auto-shift turned on. With the radio set to my favorite station, and the a/c set, I simply climb into the seat, turn the key and enjoy. I still have an older manual shift Kubota that I let others drive, as my knees just don't like the clutch work, or climbing over the transmission. IMHO and for my needs, HST is the only way to go, and the new Plus makes it even better.

I almost went with the 3940 as well. Dealer had one on the lot. I ultimately had them order a 4240, just because I thought the better loader, and a few extra HP, were worth the price difference.
