Whoa...this thread is all over the map on trucks. As a few others have suggested, I vote for the Ford Ranger w/2.3 4 banger. Can't beat the price, MPG, and it can accomplish many truck needs. Read some reviews on them...they will go forever and at your speeds, you may get 25+mpg. Not so with any other truck. Flip side is passenger space, towing, old design, lacks some creature comforts that other trucks have, etc. It's a buyer's market for trucks of all sizes. I've had Dodge Rams, Chevy Silverados, Ford Super-Dutys and an F-150...they're all good in their own right. Good luck!

Just thought I'd update you guys on my quest so far. I've come full circle on the various options several times already ;)

This past weekend, I went and drove the brand spanking new 2009 Ford F150 and the GMC Sierra 1500. Loved both of them. I took them both on the highway and they drove really really nicely.

Overall I thought that the Ford was the better truck although I prefer the looks of the GMC Sierra. The GMC is cheaper given bigger incentives from GM for good reason. The Ford was physically a larger truck and way quieter in the cab. The new six speed transmission seemed incredibly refined.

From a fuel economy perspective from talking to people at the dealership and drove on the same types of roads that I do, fuel would cost me about 20% more than my Honda van right now - which averages about 20 mpg on my drive to work.

My wife is NOT a fan of having a third vehicle. I'm still working on her but her opinion is that it is going to be one extra vehicle to maintain which will need tires and brakes and registration renewal and she partly does not want to look at a third vehicle sitting in the driveway (I don't have a garage). Her opinion is that either I should get something like a CRV or a RAV 4 with a trailer to haul this and that the 10 or 12 times a year that I need to, and dog trailer to take the dogs to training, OR, that I should just get a new truck and use it to commute and for the dogs and everything else. I would be putting a cap on it in this case.

If I only do get the one vehicle then I am biased to getting a three or four year old CRV or RAV4 - they are pretty darn reliable. However for a truck I *think* I ought to get a new one as the fuel efficience of the 2009 Ford F150 seems to be a lot better than the older model.

I am also going to go drive the Tundra this coming weekend.

One of the things that the F150 has going against it is that it is the first year of a major redesign which is often prone to teething issues, whereas this is the third year for the Tundra and Consumers Reports is finally recommending the truck after two years of not doing so for teething problems. CR believes that Ford's overall reliability is overall the best of the domestics so this biases me towards Ford and away from the GMC.

Ford incentives are quite good right now. There is $6000 from the manufacturer and I can get another $4000 as they have a special discount for suppliers - x plan or something like that. It works out so that I can get $10K off the MSRP. So ~$33 K CDN for a Supercab FX4 with the 6'6" bed and ~$35K CDN for a Supercrew with the 6'6" bed. I'm guessing that the SCREW with the larger bed will suffer a bit on fuel economy. Ford does not have any low rate financing at this time so it is a 5.5% variable rate through a local bank.

Don't know what cash incentives Toyota has at this point. The double cab seems to price out fairly close to the Ford supercab if I assume a discount from MSRP and it has 3.9% financing. This is with their 5.7L 6 speed transmission.

I really have no clue which will be more reliable.

Still very much open ended. Thanks for all the help so far.

Thanks for the update!

You gotten plenty of practical advice thus far - I'm gonna add one last plug for going "truck". Guys should have a truck! Not always practical, logical, rational, or sensible - it just is the way it should be. You test drove some now, so I'm sure you know what I mean. Once you "go truck", you will have complete disdain for anything else (except bikes and muscle cars).

Yes, my attitude is immature, frivolous, and probably based on my short man complex (only 5'6"), or having more money than brains (3x0 is still 0 - right?) - but I look forward to the end of the work week if for no other reason than to park that stinking, dependable, practical, Chevy Cobalt (a.k.a. go-kart) and drive my truck.

Just like all guys should have a tractor - they should have a truck......:D

I still think that someone with as much property as you have will be better served having a truck.

Heck, if I still lived in the 'burbs, I'd have a truck. They are way too useful.

Why I've had nothing but pick ups for the last 20 years.
Have 3 at the moment but had as many as 5 or 6 at times.

mjncad - I agree totally.

I remember when I first came onto this site to ask about tractors I had NO intention whatsoever of getting a loader. You all talked me into it and I can't believe that I had even considered not getting a loader.

Its really now between keeping my wife happy (she's vetoing 3rd vehicle) and ensuring that I am not totally wasting money and killing the earth ;-) by using a truck to commute to work everyday.

If you ask me, hooking up a trailer just seems like way too much hassle - and then I have to find a place to store the trailer that my wife won't mind. Hmm.. now that I think about it, that is a pretty good angle!

I reallly am looking forward to some 1/2 ton diesels hitting the market. Before the economy tanked, it looked like they were going to start this year with GM. Ford is supposed to have one out mid next year. Diesel is about 8 cents a liter cheaper than gasoline up here right now (~20 cents a gallon).

NuBota - you're not the only guy here that is 5'6". I am as well. Now that I think about that, perhaps I need a F-550 for my commute to work!

Get a truck, you won't regret it. I have bed cover on mine, not a topper. The bed cover is nice because you can still haul stuff and keep it dry, but fold it up and out of the way if you want to haul something tall.

Oh...If only Toyota still made those little diesel trucks.

I have a friend with a GMC 1/2 ton flex fuel and he claims to be averaging about 17. He drives it to work 30 miles. 25 is interstate, 5 is city. He has the short bed and extended cab. He really likes it and it has been reliable. An old beater probably falls outside the reliable requirement.

I have a 97 Dodge RAM Cummins 5 speed manual with 60,000 miles. It is only used for hauling stuff and pulling my quads up North. I don't drive it much in the winter and it still is in great shape. I'm never selling it. It has mechanical fuel injection and gets 21-23 MPG on the hightway at 65 mph.

The EPA has ruined the diesel trucks.

Yeah I agree with you on the EPA front. Apparently you can get a lot of fuel economy back with DPF deletes and so on but I don't know if I would pass the local emissions test that we have to do when we register our cars if I did that!

I'm hoping that a 1/2 ton diesel will get 20+ MPG and with diesel fuel being cheaper up here that would be a heck of a way to drive to work!

I drove the GMC Sierra and reallly really liked it. The Ford does seem to be a more refined truck though but the Sierra can be had for even more of a steal these days.
