That's pretty much my point. If we all keep buying NISSANS, we may find ourselves with NO domestic autos to buy and a military looking to Europe or Asia for military vehicles.

Besides, IF GM or Chrysler did go under, Ford would have less competition and Ford's quality would be even worse than it is now.

Competition is GOOD.

I take the Nissan stab pointed at me. As you know, I currently own 2 Fords and 1 GM and this is only my 3rd foreign auto in 25 years. The simple fact is even though I love the Fords I could get much more truck in a Nissan and looked at GM and they were just ugly and not nearly the truck. Also looked at Toyota and they were just too proud of them. Did not even consider Dodge again and probably never will.

I have been a Dodge ram guy for a while, but this last one has been a dud. At 200,000 km (150,000 miles or so) I have had the following repairs to what was a brand new truck:

- both valve cover gaskets failed
- both front wheel bearings failed
- air conditioning failed
- tranny fluid leak
- water pump failed
- u joint failed
QUOTE]

Was not that too long ago when 100,000 was time for a rebuild and not to mention many repairs up to that time. lol

My 04 hemi I rod the **** out of... I service every 3000 miles since new and only have had to replace a door lock relay. I am now approaching 60,000 on it and I am a happy camper with my dodge!

I also think we need gm and chrysler as stated before... we need the competition in the auto industry. I will always buy us products unless I am forced to buy other!

I am thinking it may be for the best for the companies to go bankrupt and start over with a clean slate...

As far a Ford's quality goes, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Ford was ranked up there with Toyota and Honda while GM and Chrysler did not even make the list.:D

I agree competition is good and I feel GM will survive at about 1/2 the size it is now. Government motors will be around but not too sure about Dodge/Chrysler.

By the way Builder check your transfer case. The neighbor I commonly talk about have a truck like yours has his in the shop again, what is that 4 times in the last 12 months with 2 engine problems tranny lines leaking, power seat failure and now transfer case leaking at the rear seal. They say it could be a week or more. Good thing I still have all my Fords and my Nissan, I was able to loan him a truck for the rest of the week so he did not have to drive a Cobalt they wanted to give him which actually would not be possible since he is a landscaper and has to pull a trailer every day. Tough making a living with a piece of equipment that has all these problems and only 35,000 miles. Kind of embarrassing for him having to borrow my truck since we go round and round like me and you but hey he needs to feed his family and I would help anyone out if they asked.

He actually said today if he could get rid of his truck and get a Ford he would but the trucks he has priced are 5K more than his stickered for and he is afraid he will take a big hit on his on trade in value. Plus he just had a sprayed in bed liner put in, along with new tires, plus his B&W hitch.

OK, I don't feel so bad about it after the responses.

This thread has the potential to beat EddieWalkers one about the lake for total posts.

Replaced the rotors yesterday, it was KILLER to get them off. Had to drill them through and then tap them and use jack screws to break them loose. Every bone in my body hurts today. I guess I'm not so young any more!!!

And my previous Fords managed to leak so much from the rear main seals that they ruined the brand new concrete floor in my new garage and forced me to spend hundreds of dollars to seal my driveway. Big whoop. They all leak/seep oil. Main difference with me is I'd rather have 365HP that leaked oil than 325HP that leaked oil. :)

You tell a lot of "neighbor" stories or "friend" stories. I could tell lots of stories about "neighbors" that have problems with different brands of vehicles, but they're just "stories".

Without trying to be rude, I have no idea who you are other than just a guy posting on the internet. Who knows the level of validity of what you post. Of course, the same could be said about me. The difference is, I don't do the "neighbor's GM/Ford blew up yesterday" stories. I mostly keep it to what happened to ME and I usually back it up with documentation or pictures.

That adds validity to posts.

Chris

I have no intention of getting into a "Brand" war.. I've owned more Fords than any other make.

Currently, have a '97 Explorer (wife drives it 4 miles to work) and a E350 7.3L PS. The Explorer has over 100,000 now and the van's got about 55K miles. My last PU before the Dmax was a F150 extended cab. The tranny went out at 12K, the engine went out at 50K and then the tranny went out again at 75K. I sold it after that. Never towed anything with it - at all. All maintainance at 2,000 miles.

I'm not interested in buying another Ford and most likely will NOT when these rigs go down the road. The Explorer has had 2 major engine workover's and the A/C went out and the electric doors have been fritz'en out forever. The van has been trouble-free (drippin' exhaust gasket, though). But it's never had a hard mile; one.

The Dmax has been ridden' like a 2-dollar @hore and keeps comin' back for more!!! Only problem in 100,000 miles has been a computer glitch in the transfer case that took 3 tries to get right. They had to download the software and never got the right one for the first 8 months.. Everything is still original - water pump, injectors, turbo, - everything.

I hope GM is still around when I buy my next truck; 'cause I know which one is gonna be first on my list.

Next time just jack the truck up, put it on jack stands then remove the wheels. After that get out your tape measure and find out the measurement from the back side of the rotor to the frame and cut a 2x4 the correct length. Now with the aid of a helper start the truck and hold the 2x4 in position while your helper turns the steering wheel to put pressure on the 2x4 and step back. Have them turn the steering wheel some more and it should pop it off. If not have them turn the wheel to drop the 2x4 out then rotate the rotor 90 deg and try again. Work your way around and it will pop right off. Just stand back because when that 20 LB rotor comes off it will fly 10 feet or more. Amazing how much power a Power Steering Pump has. Seen guys make winches run off them and also power log splitters.

So now you are contradicting yourself, again! You stated you did not believe in consumer reports and such but that is just what these awards are. If one was to win the award 10 years strait you may have something but these "TRUCK OF THE YEAR" awards get swapped back and forth so much they mean nothing. Plus all you listed were 1.5 to 1 years old.

I have no pictures of the leaking transfer case but did see it first hand. Pictures are just that. I could take a picture of anything and post it here and make any claim. Wait, that all ready happend to a young man claiming a bunch of plow trucks were his. Actually my daughter found the leak for him. Her ball went under his truck and she said it was "ICKY" After I climbed under there to get it I broke the bad news to him. He was not happy since it was just in the shop 3 or 4 months ago with the tranny line leaks.

As for HP goes, yes GM is winning that but still has miles to go when it comes to interiors, chassis, and features.

Good luck with your truck, you think its the best for you and that's all that matters. I am happy with my Fords and only time will tell with this Nissan.

I think that there are more than enough stories with people that have owned every brand and swear one is more or less reliable, in their experience. Drawing generalities from a limited sample size that one usually has access to through friends and family can only be so reliable.

I have more than enough people that I know well that have had their F150s without any problems whatsoever.

While I don't take their recommendations on beer, the survey results that Consumer Reports compiles on reliability do carry weight in my book - more so than he said/she said or other personal stories. The fact that they rate Ford well above GMC and Chrysler was one (certainly not the only one) plus in my book. I think that when you use a larger sample size, you getter more accurate results.

OTOH, Lemon-aid - the local used car buyers guide lists Fords (and everything domestic) as absolutely terrible with reliability - across the board.

Who do you believe?

Does this mean that my truck is going to be more reliable than someone else's GMC or Dodge or Toyota?.... I have no clue whatsoever.

I put all the data down together, realized that I liked the look, fit and finish, lack of road noise etc. on the Ford more than any other truck, and bit the bullet.

There are also lemons in every brand. I think you just have have hope you have luck on your side.

For the record, my Honda Accord which I am going to sell is 10 years old and has 300000 km (~186k miles). Other than scheduled maintenance it has needed two rear bearings, tie rods for the front end, a fuel relay replacement. That's about it.

It the old saying "you put down your money and you take your chances".

I think you made a great choice. Some truck brands suit people better than others. I have my reasons I like my brand, you have your reasons you like yours.

I just like to play devil's advocate here and there to keep the playing field "level"
