Okay for you Egon! :) So you may get your way after all.

It's discouraging that anytime anyone talks about putting a backhoe bucket anywhere near the ground that folks feel a need to talk about any and all alternatives that don't dare to disturb the soil for fear of collateral damage, buried structures & utilities, environmental hazards, wetlands violations, potential fines & lawsuits & jail time et al. It's just the times I guess. :( I should have been born 50 years earlier. :( Just once I'd like to talk with my lawyer, CPA or insurance agent about use of my backhoe without him or her treating me like a reckless fool & crazed environmental criminal. I wonder if the stump grinding folks get the same treatment?

Certainly not blaming anyone here... I asked for your opinions and, by Gawd, you all delivered. Oh well... anyone know where I can get a good deal on a stump grinder?

Hey Doug, cheer up, not sure if you have run a large stump grinder yet, but your BH is extremely safe in comparison to them :)

I hope we are not discouraging you, just trying to warn you of potential problems that some of us have encountered.

I use to hang window bars for folks, I get all done hanging these bars, and reach up and grab them and pull, just to make sure they were real secure, and the whole wall leaned out towards me................ Seems the brick mason had not used any brick tie.............. Did not fall, but you want to talk about scared.

Just trying to present some insight to keep from costly mistakes, not that you cannot do it, maybe more just as "be aware" of the possibility, and this is how we would handle similar situations.

And in the FWIW catagory, we just did a job just like what you are looking at, and stump ground them out, and the stump grinder did not get everything, but still succeeded in removing the irrigation system :(

Sometimes it goes that way.

Oh I know... sorry to have gone off on a rant. It's just the way the world is today. Very hard to make a buck today with so many "risks" to manage and "hands" in your pockets. I should switch gears and become a lawyer or insurance agent! Then I can make a great living making others feel that what they want to do is insanely crazed, illegal and/or dangerous. It's just a bad day today... too dang many expenses piling up and not enough revenue coming in. I'll feel better tomorrow. :)

Oh man! Yet another thing to worry about! :) I give up! I'm going home!

One method I've used is to use a come-along and dig/chop roots on the far side. Tighten come-along as needed to keep tension on the roots. This is after the trunk has been cut down to a couple feet high. It's hard labor especially for a one legged fat boy but I have done several that way. I don't have a back hoe by the way.

That would seem a reasonable approach Oliver.

Quite often we go overboard on caution when looking at another's situation.

I'm quite sure a spade, wood drill and axe would get the top of the stump below ground level. A lot cheaper than a stump grinder. Even an angle grinder with the right blade should work.:D :D

50 years ago people didn't like a section of their foundation removed along with tree roots either.:D

Oh, dang straight I can do it! :D Even if I have to hire Egon to help out! :D

I was back there today at the owner's request and the job may be expanding to a full-blown landscape re-design project... including some serious backhoe work instead of merely pulling out a few badly overgrown weeds. The only touchy point is schedule. I can't see the entire (expanded) project coming together on his timetable. If he holds to it, I'm back to being a mere large weed puller.
