The shearbolt on the PTO shaft protects the gearbox, this is the one that normally breaks first if you try to move something that is not white and fluffy. There is a shearbolt that goes thru the blower and the blower shaft that protects the blower. The auger is protected by a shearbolt just inboard from the smaller chain sprocket, you can just barely see it in your picture. Attached is a picture of a blue JRW with the big half-moon chute turning device that comes from JRW, minus the hydralic cylinder.. Mine came with the device, but I just made my own...black blower picture.

My flighting on my auger is made from a one piece spiraled 1/2" X 1 1/2" cold rolled, and yours might just be an older design with the end flighting welded on. Probably just a bad weld and you can fix it up better than new. The augers do little work other than gather the snow, they get most of their abuse from backing into trees/rocks/etc... I would spend some extra time cleaning up the inside of the chute and inside the blower area. Get them as smooth as posibile and put on a freash coat of paint. During the winter, the paint will disappear some, and the metal will get polished from all the rocks and sand you pick up. A fresh coat of paint each spring keeps these areas ready for the snow the next winter...
I take my chute off each spring and apply a fresh coat of white lithum grease....a little lube on the chain and shes ready....... Have fun...I have a feeling we are going to be using our snow removal equipment LOTS this winter.....

Jerry....with the hydraulic contraption on the blue blower, does it still use cables or is there some sort of worm gear similar to the pics that Scooby posted?? I wonder if JRW still has any spare parts kicking around? Eric

The stock contraption is a 'D' shaped thing that mounts where the tapped plate is, and the 'D' faces away from the chute. A hydralic cylinder can be dropped onto the contraption, one end on the 'peg' your picture shows by the chute, and the other end on a peg on the 'D'. Cables go around the chute and around the outside of the 'D', which is made of rolled channel so the cable won't fall off the outside of the 'D'. It is a pretty simple setup, but I would think that any setup off any brand blower chute could be modified to work for you. You can spin the chutes around manually real easy, so it would not have to be much of a cylinder. Even an electric setup or hydralic motor would be worth looking into.... Good luck !!

PS: 'Contraption' is a great name for it...!!!!

Are they still in business? My dealer is installing a hydraulic chute for the JRW 60" I bought from them 4 years ago and he said that JRW is out of business. Anyone else heard this?

The following is for your info on JRW...... I think they got in trouble for not having a permit for their painting operation...most shops have to have air quality permits for enviromental reasons... eh? Couldn't afford to spend all those loonies to build an up to date paint booth.....

Hi all - I have one the Erskine 6' frontmount snowblower attachments on my JD4500. What Erskine has done to help prevent snow from clogging inside the shute is line it with a piece teflon. It's about an eighth inch thick and held in place with rivets. It will wear over time but very easy to change out for a new one. Plus, they are easy to fabricate if you have access to a sheet of it.
