All that time switching pistons and rings around he's probably got the pore ole thing wore out already. The pony may have died but I want to hear about the funeral.

*LMAO* That makes two....

Don't forget to update us on how this turns out...:)

Since the rods are long put weight on them to compensate for the weight of the pistons. How does the total weight know which one is which? That is to say it is in the pistons or rods? I agree the best way, is to do it right by putting in two more pistons. It does send a message that to botch something is ok, and it isn't. If this student learns to do it right, when people come in the shop for such work as this, and they will in latter years, she can learn a valuable lesson, send them down the street to the shadetree boys. Now, before someone suggests how ignorant I am, I know the proper way is to balance pistons, rods, crank etc.
I have been there, done that, and I know there are people who will go against every correct rule of precision work.

I agree with the others: lighten the heavier ones. Could do this easily by drilling some holes in the skirts.

I ran my chipper/shredder once without the chipper blade in place. It vibrated. Think it rotates a bit faster than the 540 PTO because of the pulley differences between the PTO shaft and the shredder shaft, but it still can't be very fast.

No recent news on the project. FYI

With all the swapping of piston locations, they are getting good experience in assembly and disassembly. I wonder if they reusing the gaskets, or installing new ones. I have a feeling that no matter where the pistons are located, that the bearings, and possibly the crankshaft are going to fail in short order. I don't think even occasional use to drive the tractor on and off a trailer the engine will survive. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out in the end. If the engine goes into self destruct mode, and ruins any one component, such as the block or crankshaft, that will be more expensive to find a replacement than the cost of two pistons. If the owner doesn't want to spring for 2 new pistons, I wonder what other components he is also skimping on, such as reusing the old gaskets, or engine bearings. This reminds me of the old timer that ran a garage in NH. When he changed the oil in a car, he would save that oil for when he changed the oil in his truck. He always reused just about everything and wasted nothing. When he died, the building was cleaned of everything, and it was a treasure trove of old used up worn out parts. Only time will tell what will happen with this engine.

I must think tractors WAY too much.... first time I read this.. I read it.... This reminds me of the old timer that ran a garage in New Holland. Had to read it a second time to get New Hampshire in there...

Same as trying to start a lawnmower without the blade on. Tried that in my early mechanic days, tried quite a while, as I remember it. No blade = not much flyweel = won't have the momentum to start/run. Except for the student, I'd like to see this tractor belch a rod to teach a lesson. Gettin' cranky, I guess.

I was waiting for something about reusing him for parts. :)

He was very old and his parts were very worn, and not good for much more than worm food. :D
