I have 2 male boxer dogs, I raised one from a puppy and he is an extreemly good dog. The other is a 2 yr old male boxer that I've had about a yr. He is agressive towards other animals. He has attacted my two goats and a couple neighbor dogs. He is okay around people for the most part, but is leary around men and makes people a bit nervous with his behavior.....I have a 4-1/2 month old baby girl. So far no issues, but my question is how likely is a dog with this behavior to ever become agressive toward her? Say she goes to him while he is eating and tries to take his food, how likley is a dog with his profile gonna be to attack her?....I'm just looking for oppinions and other people's experiences in a situation like this.
*Should I get rid of him just to be on the safe side?... TIA

To many good friendly dogs out there so no need for any aggressive unfriendly problematic dogs so get rid of it and get one of the others.

If you are going to keep him, neuter the dog. This may or may not provide a "temperence". The least it will do is prevent a testicular or prostate cancer if he lives to old age.He may also need more time to settle in at your house. What you do have going for you is genetics. Haven't come across many a mean boxer. Some of the sweetest dispositions in the dog kingdom. You'll get a better handle on all of this when he is introduced to the baby. If you get that intense look and centeredness attack dogs get before they attack, please get rid of your dog now and spare yourself a world of misery later. Another bad sign is if the dog shys away with ears down. You now have the chance of your child being fear bit. My and others generalizations do not mean a hoot compared to you knowing and observing your own surrounds with that particular animal. Just trust your instincts. Sentimentality is of no use to you in this regard. If you have even the slightest inclination of unease, provide the animal another placement. This is kinda like allowing someone to drive home drunk. Generalizations say don't do it and statistics bear that out. I did know the one fella however that actually became a better driver when buzzed including gaining improved reflexes. In this rare case, the alchohol acted as a med to keep him centered. He was the worse sober driver I've ever encountered. Observe and trust your instincts. At any rate, you are going to need al this heightened awareness later on when she starts dating.

Its pretty obvious you are going to keep the dog-so take the following precausions:
1. get a divorce
2. make arrrangements for boarding the dog durring visits to your child.
3. neuter the dog
4. neuter yourself so your next dog choice will not be influenced by child safety.
that pretty well covers it

If I were in your situation, I wouldn't be here waiting to decide what to do on others advice. I would be busy getting rid of a dog and I wouldn't foster the problem on anyone else...Period!!

I am afraid the answer is to put the dog down. He has a track record of attacking other animals. Your baby is another animal. One the dog can kill very quickly and easily. It can happen so fast that by the time you react. Even if you are right next to the dog and baby the baby could be seriously hurt or dead.

Can you or your wife live with that for the rest of your life? I seriously doubt your marriage will survive if the dogs does something to the baby.

When my wifey and brought her two Golden Retrievers and my GSD together for the first time we expected problem between my GSD who was an alpha female and the oldest of the Golden's which was also an alpha. We watched the dogs carefully. We were sitting right next to them.

Without warning and quicker than you could snap a finger the YOUNGEST Golden attacked the oldest. There was fur flying. I grabed the youngest while the wife grabed the oldest. It did not take two seconds. My dog just sat there with this "What the .... was that all about" look on her face. :D Best we could figure is that the youngest saw the pack dynamic was changing and it was her chance to move up in ranking. The youngest dog was the sweetist, least aggressive dog I have ever seen. My nick name for her was Lady.

That was the first and last time we ever saw any aggression from Lady. If Lady had attacked a baby the kid almost certainly would have been dead. It took NO TIME to happen.

We closely watched the dogs when we had our first child. All of the previously mentioned dogs were still alive. We never had a problem but we watched the dogs closely especially when the baby was new to the house. My GSD once kinda growled at the baby. It was not an aggressive growl. It was a "Would you please leave me alone, stop pulling my hair and climbing on me" noise. I put the dog on the ground by the scuff of her neck and we had a serious chat. She never ever made a noise at any of the kids ever again. If she had shown real aggression she would have been put down.

I don't say that lightly either. The GSD was the best dog I have ever brought into the family. I will never ever have a dog that was smarter or as loyal as that GSD. I will never have a dog that approaches the quality of that GSD. When we had our first child the GSD was about 5. If the GSD had acted aggressively towards the kids she would have been put down. It would have hurt like h....l. But it would hurt a lot less if the dog killed/maimed/injured my baby. I can live with the former but not the later.

Later,
Dan

my reply is probably useless, since i got rid of two dogs over the years, for snapping at kids: no bite involved, but i wouldn't take that chance: one was an Akita male and one a boxer male: i don't care what a dog is doing, or what one of my GRANDkids does to it, if it snaps at them, its over.

Neutering you or the dog will work the same -- your personality will not change and neither will his:p
My vet once gave me very good guidance -- our 110lb Lab had an infection in his foot and I told the vet that I had never seen the dog be aggressive toward people and despite the pain the dog was about to undergo I thought we would be ok just holding him. The vets response --- the big dogs that he treats are always non aggressive -- the aggressive ones don't last long:eek:
