After much research, I finally ordered a Salsco Model 600 wood chipper to help me tame the growing piles of branches, twigs and dead wood from the many trees on my property. Other brands I considered include DR, Mighty Mac, Patu, and Wallenstein. Settled on the Salsco because it seemed like a good balance between price, features and quality, plus the right size for my tractor.

Congratz on the purchase. If you find that you have run out of things to chip at your place let me know. The recent wind storms here in CT have drowned a great many branches. Looks like a great machine. Look foward to seeing your reviews.

Congrats; these things are invaluable, probably my most useful attachment except for the FEL. Have fun with it.

I might be getting my first tractor on the weekend, a 1949 massy harris pony, 11hp. (I am 14 and have almost no budget and this is $1000 obo with a mower and a plow, I will still have to borrow money from my dad for it) and I might get one of these for it. Please post a review.:D

You'll be fine chipping small stuff. My first tractor running a chipper was only 18 HP. 3-4 inch stuff is firewood to me anyway....... so no need to chip bigger stuff.

I run a 4inch Patu Chipper on my BX24 most of the stuff that goes into the chipper is under 2.5 inches in diameter anything bigger is fire wood.

I like the Salsco feeder tube being more upright, my Patu is made for bigger tractors and expects the 3ph to be higher, so the feed tube is about knee / thigh height.

My plans have just totally changed, it turns out that the tractor is a total wreck. First of all, it needs new tires, front and back. (worth more then the tractor) Second it has way more rust then it looked like in the photo.

I am instead thinking of saving my cash and getting a tow behind 6 inch hydraulic feed at auction next summer.

Oh and also, Salsco said that chipper is for as low as 8 hp. (I know it would bog down a lot at that power though)

First weekend with the Salsco Chipper (sorry no pics yet).

First impressions:

Built like a tank, high quality product.
Chews up anything I throw at it.
Pretty easy to use and feels safe...wife was using it too.
Wish the output shoot could be rotated...not always convenient for the chips to only exit one direction.
Not so effective with leaves and small twigs, but it's not a shredder, so no surprise there.
The owners manual could be a lot better, especially page on how to cut down the PTO shaft.
Easy to hook-up, although finding that shaft coupling button to connect to the tractor PTO is a bit of a PITA...wish it was a ring.
It's heavy! Made a dolly for moving it around the garage, very handy.
Overall, I'm pleased. We'll see how it goes with servicing (belt tightening, knife sharpening, etc.)
