Coobie,
You will be happy with the x740 and diesel.
1* I am amazed how little fuel mine uses, filled mine this evening and mowed about 2 acres and it is still barely above the 3/4 mark.
1*I can mow this 2.33 acres 3 or 4 times these 2 tractors befor refilling.
Well we finally ordered our first john deere lawn tractor an X740 with the 7 iron deck, deluxe seat, brush guard & front tire fenders.
2*I sold my kubota ZD326 pro ZTR since we sold our larger property and now need a just a large garden tractor. This will be our first john deere mower/tractor.
3*I hope its just as tough and dependable as our kubota ZTR.coobie.
2*The x740 is a nice garden tractor but i found them to be expensive and not enough tractor for what I wanted.
3*The BX1500 and BX1800 series S-Cuts are that tough and dependable .
4*Congrats that's a top of the line tractor! Can get just about any kind of attachment you would need. Been dreaming about trading in my 2 Craftsman mowers on an X series. I'm green with envy! :D
4*Congrats that's a top of the line garden tractor!

5*Coobie you're gonna love the Power of that Diesel ...
5*I love the power of my 3 diesels .

6*The X500 and X700 series really have no competition from other brands.
6*The x500 has a lot of competion with several different other brands .
The x700 series Garden tractor has competion with other brands such as the Simplictly Legacy XL which I consider a little more tractor than a garden tractor but less tractor than a S-Cut.
A Garden tractor simply can not compete with a S-cut or Cut in many cases.

I'm looking so I'm curious how you feel the Simplicity Prestige, and Legacy XL fall short.
7*I know the X700 garden tractor uses the same transaxle as the Legacy, but don't know much about other comparisons.
7* The Legacy XL is a cross between the X700 garden tractor and a Sub compact.

8*What scared me about simplicity products website was it seemed to be cutting back on some of there products they used have to offer.
8*I'm suprised that I have never heard about that.

The biggest problem with 9*Simplicity is lack of dealerships.
10* Plus, if I develop a good relationship with a Deere or Kubota dealership on my X500 or X700 series lawn tractor.
11*I can upgrade to a CUT at the same location since they have a full line of tractors and equipment.
12*As often discussed on TBN, having a local dealer can be a huge part of the decision.
13*If you have good local dealership and are happy with the Simplicity.
9*The Simplicity dealer is 7 or 8 miles from me.
I bought my first tractor from them .
It was a 1966 Bolens 850.
Still have it and it still runs after all these 45 years .
JD is about 3 or 4 mile from here.
Don't have any experence with them as they are pretty new here in this town .
Don't know anyone around here who has delt with them
I live about 2 or 3 miles fron the Kubota dealer.
Have known this family since grade school and know the dealers older brother very well as we graduated High School together back in 1959.
10*I have at least 2 good dealers here.
11*I've already gotten out of garden tractors and moved on up to S-Cuts.
12*I'm fortunate to have 2 of them here
13*Right.
14*Both the Legacy and the Prestige have changes over my older Legacy that I really like,
15*and the price is less than green.
I'm looking for any input on both of these tractors including any snowblowing experience.
14*The LegacyXL is a whole different ball game than the prestage and other Simplicities.
15* That is rite.

coobie,
What I have found from 45 years of tractor use is that having the right sized machines for the job is very important. Features for the task at hand are important too, so I chose the x749 for mowing duty, does a great job of that and suits ME better than a subcut which doesn't have the aws.

IMO, subcuts aren't enough tractor to get much done, thats what I use the 4520 and 820 for. Not trying to be arrogant here if a new subcut would have been better for me I would have bought one, not much difference in price between ax x749 and a subcut to be an issue. People need to buy what fits their own unique circumstances.

For the work I do the combination of the small x749, 110tlb and 4520 covers a wide range of tasks and all have 3PH and 540 ptos. I suspect the x740 will handle all your mowing tasks well so have fun and enjoy it.

Is there some official definition of what constitutes a "tractor" as opposed to "garden tractor"?

I just sold my kubota ZD326 pro zero turn that we used at our property we sold.No longer needed it.I agree with you about having the correct sized machines for every job. That is why I bought the JD X740 it fit our needs.I also have a 1996 ingersoll 4020 with 3 point hitch,2008 Kioti DK40se 4X4 with front end loader & 2006 kubota 4X4 RTV 900 full cab with snow plow.I guess we got all bases covered,LOL.coobie

Thats pretty easy to define in my opinion. A real tractor will not have a frame. The motor, transmission and rear end will make up the tractor.. Now a garden tractor it will have a frame to support the motor, transmission, and rear end.. That is just my opinion I could be wrong but don't think so....

Coobie,
Thats a short wait but well worth it, you will be happy with the x740 and diesel. I am amazed how little fuel mine uses, filled mine this evening and mower about 2 acres and it is still barely above the 3/4 mark. Congratulations and enjoy your new mower.

I totally agree, the gas motor is very thirsty, if one is going to buy an X700 series, go Diesel, you will not regret it. I love my X744!

I based my purchase from owning a 2007 kubota ZD326 pro model diesel(26hp) ZTR that sipped fuel verses my 1996 ingersoll 20hp onan(gasser) that drinks 87 octane fuel like a drunken sailor.coobie
