Per the Manual my truck can handle 1800lbs tongue weight with a standard hitch (I have never in 15 years of owning an HD truck had a weight distributing hitch) it is a class V 2-1/2 hitch.
I have looked at expensive hitches with scales built in but that is just another gadget. After 20+ years of hauling I think you can load a trailer, look at it, drive it a few miles and tell if it is right or wrong. Sure you can get your calculator out and analyze, but common sense and experience will prevail.
If the truck can handle 17,700lbs the, trailer can handle 14,000 lbs ( before we start talking or considering pin weight) and we are talking about a 5-6000 lb tractor and 1000-1500lbs of implements I have plenty of room for error.
I just wanted extra room to move forward and back to give the ability to load the trailer better. Heck right now she is on a 16 trailer for a job tomorrow. Forks are in the bed of the truck, bucket is curled down over the front of the trailer, but it works. Not the best but it works.
New trailer should be here next week.
