Doesn't Oregon offer assistance with suicide?
Dunno about the State offering euthanasia assistance.

Rather, it recognizes the right for an individual to make that decision, and to hold harmless someone who in good faith is asked to assist.

Dad in his final year was clear in the head, but polio from 50 years earlier had finally destroyed the last of his swallowing and anti-choking muscles. The doctors drilled a feeding tube into his belly and gave him a funnel. He also recognized he was a hazard driving and gave up his license on his 88th birthday, a difficult decision when he lived alone at the ranch. At that point he told me he felt like a walking dead man and said let's just go up to Oregon where it's legal and arrange a lethal injection.

Later that year he died of a stroke so I never had to face the euthanasia issue. Dad didn't have moral concerns, just legal. He had arranged to donate his body to UC-SF School of Medicine to study the effects of polio with nothing returned for a traditional funeral, so we just had a memorial service instead. That's how he wanted it.

Sounds like a good guy. When my dad was in the final stages of cancer, I thought he was suffering badly. It was hard to watch. I told him if he was my dog, I'd have put him down. He laughed and assured me "It's not so bad."

I told him OK, but let me know if it gets too bad. He went through multiple heart stoppage and resuscitations, revoking his do not resuscitate order 3 times, until he finally had enough. The Dr's loaded him up with morphine and he passed the next day. But, it was his decision as to when he was ready and had enough.

How old was he when he had polio, and how old was he when those post polio symptoms started?

Dad went down to enlist, days after Pearl Harbor. His physical found active tuberculosis so instead of military he spent a year or two in Weimar Sanatorium, a quarantine hospital/living compound up in the mountains, since there was no effective treatment in those days. The body naturally encapsulates tuberculosis modules, so he was then able to return to work but advised no heavy physical activity.

Then 1952. His age 40. Polio epidemics were rampant. Dad, his brother, and I (little kid) built a fence on a hot day then we all went swimming at the municipal pool. Little sister got sick first, then Dad, then his brother. Dad spend a year in an Iron Lung at County Hospital, then returned to work (desk job), with many muscles weakened. Little sister claims lasting effects but nothing specific. Dad's older brother was severely disabled. For the rest of his life nearly unable to pull himself out of his wheelchair, slept in a bed with a motor that alternately tilted up and down to assist breathing at night. I might have slight effects, the only one is slightly less anti-choke reflex if I inhale water etc but nothing else.

Dad had lifelong weakened muscles overall, not severe limitation but not full adults strength. We were told he learned to use alternate muscles for swallowing after the normal muscles were paralyzed, and this extra strain was what ruined those muscles by the time he was elderly.

Next year after we all got sick, the Salk vaccine was introduced and the world's annual polio epidemics ended.

Thanks for the information, California. I had polio when I was 22 months old, but it mostly just affected my left leg. I spent 6 weeks in the Crippled Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City for surgery on my left foot and ankle when I was about 8, then later one week. And I sure realized how minor my polio results were, compared to others. My mother used to worry about it coming back in later life, so I was curious about your father.

I remember the Sugar Cubes... for Polio Vaccine...

Yep, I've taken them, even though I'd had polio, the doctors figured you could have it more than once; not like some other diseases.

Yep. I took the shots before the sugar cube came out, and then I took the sugar cube. I'm told the shots were developed using monkey tissue and it was later discovered that it carried a virus that caused benign tumors.

I just looked through the Wikipedia article that Ultrarunner referenced. It discusses this monkey culture/ benign tumor correlation that was discovered in the 60's. Since then the monkeys are screened to verify they don't have the specific monkey virus that can be transferred to humans via the injection.
