Origins of saying

REgarding the whole 9 yards- the radio station I work for has a program by a retired english professor- they talk about word use, grammer and origins of words and sayings. He claims that the plane story is just that- a story. I think there is evidence that the facts are wrong in it, but there is no clear, definitive origin. Just thought I'd throw that in.

I had heard this story before too. I think it more depends on the plane than a blanket statement, since different planes held different capacities.
