I am building 8'x8' pump house with 2 by 4's. Can I use 1/2" OSB (or 7/16) for the roof and siding? I am going to put a tar paper and shingles on the top for the roof. For the siding, just a coat of paint. Thanks.

OSB will work well. I would suggest painting the inside with a good alkyd paint as well. You'll need to make sure you seal the edges with paint too.

In my experience OSB is fine for the roof- not sure I would use it for a painted wall. It will work, but it will look less than nice. I would look at T-111 or some other type of exterior grade panel siding. Yes this comes at a cost, but I think you will be much happier with the finished product.
If you do use OSB make sure to paint ALL of the edges so it doesn't draw moisture.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but you asked!

The nice thing about OSB is that it's almost as much resin and glue as it is wood. Seal the edges and you won't have any probems.

Thanks for the replies. I will seal the edges well.

i know that osb is relatively cheap and if its out of sight then you should be good to go. but it will become an eyesore after a while. the siding part i mean. the roof should be fine. how about shingling the siding?

OSB will work fine for the roof, but I would use something else for the walls if you simply want to paint them. While the new OSB is much more water resistent then the early versions it still has numerous edges to catch water. Generally OSB is stronger in sheer strength but weaker if you try to impact it from the side than plywood would be. Any t1-11 or exterior rated plywood would do a better job in my opinion.

Get exterior grade OSB for the roof sheathing.

Painted OSB siding looks crummy. Use something like Sturdi-panel siding(Home Depot). I costs twice as much as OSB, but it looks a lot better painted.

Don't forget to add trim boards in the corners. Makes the job look really neat.

The two photos show an 10'x12' shed I built using the Sturdi-panel before painting and after the first coat.

osb is fine for the roof, it is slippery though. be carefull when walking or even kneeling on any unsecured peices. I stepped on a small scrap and thought I was going to ski off the roof.

OSB is fine for almost any application where it will be covered by something else. As an exterior, i.e., exposed to the weather, no way. I used some in a basement ceiling screwed on so I could remove panels later if needed to get at wiring and plumbing. I painted it. I could not believe how much paint it will soak up. IIRC it took at least 3 coats to make a decent job. I for sure wouldn't try it on an outside surface.

For an 8x8 project, the total cost will stay within reason even if you use premium siding.
