OTC pain relievers and dogs

My vet recommended glucosamine chondroitin sulfate for my aging German shepherd who was having joint pain. He told me vets originally prescribed it for horses. Many of the vets who saw how well it worked for the horses began taking it for their own joint pain. Eventually it became popular for people.

After I saw the difference it made in my dog, I began taking it.

Costco has a really good price on it, as it isn't cheap. (Costco - Kirkland Signature™ Extra Strength Glucosamine / Chondroitin 170 Tablets ) I take two pills every morning and swear by it.

He also said there are several variations but the one that works the best is the combination, glucosamine chondroitin sulfate.

John, I assume that is NOT a prescription medication, right?

It isn't actually a medication. It is a supplement made mostly of shellfish. It is not regulated by the FDA.

I eat enough shellfish already so it probably wouldn't help me.:(

I don't know if I eat enough or not, but I've not been known to pass up any.:D

Depending on how you feel about the dog it still may be safest to run it by a vet first. You never know if your dog's particular breed has issues with certain medications and dosing for animals may not be very straightforward. OK, Safety Tzar mode off :)

hmmm... i thought glucosamine/chondroitin came from some part of sharks. i take one of them a day. i get mine in the mail from Swanson. its not expensive at all. i don't think it will relieve the dog's pain but it can be used in conjunction with pain meds. i have been also trying golden raisins soaked in gin which hasn't done a thing for me so far but i keep trying.

If it hasn't done a thing for you, you obviously are not using enough gin. If you use enough gin, it'll definitely do something for you. What is does may not be good and you may not like it, but you won't be able to say it hasn't done a thing.:D

BTW in case anyone doesn't know- Raisins are poisonous to dogs, gin or not:eek:
