speaking of that. I think I may be getting a older rem 742 woodsmaster in .308 in the deal as well.. just seeing how that pans out.

I've never hunted in .308

hows it compair between the 30-30 and 30-06?

thanks

I have a BLR in .308 and I really like that rifle.

I go out of my way to get 180 gr. bullets for it. Out to 300 yards the trajectory is good with the 180s, and for the hunting I do in OR it doesn't matter what the game is: deer, bear, elk, or cougar, hit them and they go down.

There is a lot of virtue in one gun, one bullet, and one sight setting for all kinds of game.

I'd check it out closely. From what I have read, they area a handy rifle, but the bolt likes to chew up the receiver if it has a lot of rounds fired.

I like the idea of the pump better; a nice companion to a 870 pump shotgun...

The 308 (at least in the 160+ grain rounds) is typically about 50 yds shorter for the same drop as a 30-06. At least at the 300-350 yd and out range. 270 is a flatter trajectory the others both (easier to range your animal).

308 and 30-06 use the same reloading dies, you just set the sizing die to a different length. Same bullets too.

Not sure on the pumps, but the 740's have a wear issue on the receiver rails. I believe there were major improvements when they replaced it with the 7400 (both autos).

I have reloaded a lot of 308 and 30-06 over the last 30 years. Now, I am getting ready for 30-06 Ackley Improved.

I have never seen any reference to using the same reloading dies for 308 and 30-06. They use the same shell holder, same bullets, and some powders, but that is all. Otherwise, the cases are dimensionally different. The 308 is obviously shorter, but is also more straight walled. The shoulder angle is different, as is the neck length.

Neither my old Speer, new Speer, Sierra, nor Ken Waters "Pet Loads" reloading books make reference of this.

For safety sake, review the loading books before trying this.

I agree. I use different dies, but it wouldn't surpise me if people do it that way. Why wouldn't they mark the dies .308 / 30-06?

I agree but you could use the same die if you were only neck sizing and not full length sizing!

I guess you could, but the neck lengths are different. I could probably neck size 300 Savage with same die too.

I would prefer to have the die set for each cartridge. Standard dies are not that expensive.

Even neck sizing to be consistent you want the die to just bump the shoulder and if you aren't using the right die you aren't consistently touching the shoulder if that makes any sense.
To be neck sizing in the first place you are using brass previously fired in one particular rifle's chamber. So when setting up your die to neck size you want the shoulder of the case to come into complete contact with the die, but not size it. To do that the die needs to match the round. Using a die with a different shoulder angle you are making contact with the brass at one small place instead of the full length or close to it of the shoulder.

I too have never seen articles or books suggest using the same dies for sizing 30.06 and 308. I have seated bullets in different cases with the same caliber bullets in a pinch but the question would be why try sizing when you want the tolerances to be accurate? JMHO
I shoot a lot of 165 grain bullets in the 308 and 140's in the 270. Sighted at MPBR (293 for the 270 and 264 for the 308) I really can't see much practical difference in field shooting between the two -- again JMHO

On reloading , not sure about the .308 to .30-06 deal , but we routinely ran .30-06 casings into our .270 dies , resizing it , then into a case trimmer for a final trim . Some required some trimming while many others did not , just depended upon if it had only been shot once or multiple times . Have never had any issues with those .
The one I did have a issue with was a old military casing that my uncle had reloaded , ( he thought our set-up was cool , so he bought everything including die sets that he did not even have a rifle for ) . Lesson learned on my part , I don't use others reloads since then .

Back to OP's original post , I think you will truly enjoy your new rifle . The Bullet maker I listed , ( Barnes ) , use to make a 180 grain bullet but quite making those so I bought like 4 boxes on clearance and still have a couple of boxes of the 150 grain all copper originals to . ( Those are a nasty , tear the inside's up bullet ) . I'll post a picture this weekend of the bullet I pulled from my last Elk . Hit in the neck , leaving a fairly good size hole , through the entire body cavity , then lodged between the hide and the left back thigh area .
