I bet that the next generation nail guns will have a mechanism that will be harder to override by simply pulling it back with duck-tape or bailing wire. It will have to cycle from extended to compressed to release each nail.

Of course, the root safety issue is the guy falling off the roof in the first place: The operator of the nail gun should be using a FOPS.

My finish nailer does this now... You have to press the gun to the work thus compressing the foot, then pul the trigger. You have to lift the gun and press it into the work again to fire the next nail. You only get one nail at a time.

I think I've seen framing nailers that can be set to do this. The process is called "sequential trip"...

That is the way we set up my dad's air nailer. It came with both types of triggers and since we weren't in a huge hurry we elected to use the sequential trip.
My brother does heating and air conditioning in new houses and said OSHA has been cracking down on those modified nailers as well as ladders that aren't up to code.

My local news printed this yesterday:

PLYMOUTH, Mass.

A carpenter driving nails with a high powered nail gun died after one pierced his heart. The 22 year old was using an air powered nail gun at a job site when "one nail just took a wrong turn", his father said.

Married with an 11 month old son, the man worked with a subcontractor on the commercial and residential development project, about 50 miles southeast of Boston.

OSHA is investigating.
