I saw another link on that page at the bottom for other stories. A boy called "000" to save his Mum.

In most parts of the states, 911 is the emergency number. Is 000 the number down there, or did the boy get a regular operator by dialing "0" and was forwarded to emergency services?

Around here, 0's get you the regular operator.

Robert,

000 is our emergency number in Australia. But most of these areas are out of reach (no service)
It is hard to explain the dangers to city folk about the outback of Australia, but the first rule is do not leave your car, conserve your energy, and rest in the shade of the vehicle, do not walk. You only last a short time doing so in heat that can sometimes be 120f.
