Deck problem solved, I hope.

I took another crack at removing and reinstalling the deck today with the hopes that I'd get this set up properly. I think the problem was that the deck was way out of level left to right. I dropped the adjustment nut a fair amount and got it leveled side to side. The front to back seemed proper, but quite frankly I cannot figure out how one can truly measure the blade tips with the deck on a hard level surface and it positioned mid way to the ground.

Anyone have any tips on how they measure for level (getting a measurement underneath the deck as the manual suggests you should do)?

I mowed the yard again this afternoon and after 1 1/2 hours the pins stayed in their proper position. I am beginning to like the unit more and more each time I use it.

On the deck leveling, I ripped a couple pieces of 2x4 to 3", the height I mow at. On the discharge side, it's easy to view from the side, on the closed end of the deck, I slip the 2x4 under the deck and just feel for the difference. I turn the blade by hand to get it at 90 degrees to the tractor.

Good Luck,
Curt

Welcome to the 2500 club!

I had to replace my PTO at 300 hours. After more careful reading of the manuel. I engage at half throttle.

You mean you didn't follow the manual like it was the Bible? :)
Or are you now following your gardener Manuel's advice ;)

Regardless of throttle position, I've never seen or heard of an electric PTO needing to be replaced due to being worn out (worn clutch material). It's the coil or sealed wiring that normally goes on them. Engine RPM has nothing to do with the electrics on them. They're just a an on/off coil that either works or doesn't.

My '98 2165 w/about 700 hours has never had a PTO replaced. I engage it by setting the throttle to less than 1/2 and pulling the choke at the same time as engaging the PTO, then push the choke back in immediately. This keeps the engine from dying. I also avoid disengaging/engaging the PTO at every whim. And the B & S Vanguard engine is sooo smooth.

I wouldn't say I follow the manuel like it's the bible. But, I try to follow it more after having to spend over $300 to have the PTO replaced. If I remember right it was the clutch that went out and it wouldn't disengage.

I find it amazing the one guy can have no problems for years and then the next guy has problems after a few hours.
