Outdoor Wood Furnace

dtd24 - there are a few good threads on this topic already, so in addition to what feedback you get here do a few quick searches to read more.

I really like my Heatmor brand. It's one of the forced draft type units.

My hookup is not as efficient as yours will be because I do a water-water heat exchage between the outdoor boiler and an indoor boiler. You will be able to install a heat exchanger in your furnace plenum and get every bit of heat out of the boiler.

There are a few brands out there (Central being one of them) that have new units that meet some new EPA standard - may be worth looking into that aspect.

I've had a Classic OWF for a few years now and would like to provide a couple pieces of input. Proper seasoning of wood means less smoke, better BTU.

I love my classic unit and really enjoy my walk out at night to load it up. Does not bother me how cold it is, I love no paying for oil.

Anyway, funny story....last week, I'm leaving to work and drive around the house and find an oil truck in my driveway. I ask what he is doing there and he says he just gave me 143 gallons. I asked why? He replied he has a ticket for delivery. I say "well, I did'nt request it, so please remove it". Very gratifying and will keep me smiling as I make my daily walk out to put wood in.

Hope that never happens here. The oil furnace was removed about 20 years ago along with the tank in the basement. Maybe I should seal off the pipe running through the foundation...

Defective / Sound like a good idea. I know here once when I bought oil they sent out an engineer to check my tank . they didn't tell me , just a guy showed up .I assume thats what he was looking for.

I would. That would simply be an ugly situation to find a few hundred gallons of fuel in your basement...YUK!

Actually did one better...

Took the grinder to it. Cut it flush with the wall & squirted in some foam. Next time I'm playing with my box of patchcrete, I'll smear some over it & make it disappear.

I have a Central Boiler OWF and think it is fantastic! I heat a large area and find it pretty darn effecient with wood use and have no issues with burn times. I also had a very good dealer and his advise was right on target.

By the way Central Boiler has a web site, centralboiler.com. You can find lots of info there.

I'm not sure how our friends to the north handle it but, it would be a very expensive problem here!
