How far away from their house was the furnace? I never thought about it using extra wood if further from the house. How close did they end up relocating it?

Moved it from 75 feet to 10 feet. Plus...less wood burned, Negative...so close to house, smoke swirls and is a constant nuisance.

By the way, my dad swears by his outside furnace. I ask him about the smell on his clothes--he says he can't smell anymore because of smoking so many years. I say what about the smell in his bedroom at night, he says, I like the smell of wood burning...I say, but is smells like creosote--yuck. I say, but it burns so much wood, he says--Cutting wood keeps me young ie. 75.
Who knows...to each their own. It works for him...not for me.

Some folks have had success by putting on a taller stack, my neighbor has done so and only burns seasoned wood. He burns year 'round for hot water and the smell and smoke aren't that obvious. I was told by one dealer that locating more than 25 feet from the house required trenching the lines deeper to avoid loosing too much heat.

Why not put it beside the house and run a stack up the side of the house?

I believe building code does not allow the outside furnace to be right next to a house. We put higher stacks but high winds keep taking them down, even with wires.

I belive you are right . I think it is 6-8 feet minimum from any structure. I had one and was sick and tired of freezing my butt off while tending to it so when I built my garage I was going to but it inside. Insurance company said " No Way " then I thought well, I will just put it right beside the garage and have just the furnace door sticking in the garage. Still, No Dice. So, I finally sold it and got a coal/wood/oil boiler for in the garage that is legal. I'm glad I did, The boiler is much more efficient. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What kind of support did you get from the company? Did that deliver and set up or did you do the install yourself? I'm a few years from a garage but see the advantage of the gassification units over the OWB.

Rogdan, What is the difference between the gassification unit as opposed to the outdoor wood burner? Do the gassification units also go outside? Are they the onnes that have all the controls that actually burn the smoke?

Thanks,

John
