( a finish mower needs more hp than a rough cut bush hog type )

actually, I think that's backwards, at least to a point...

for example, a lot of tractors I've been looking at (NH TC 31/34, Kubota B2630/3030 L2800/3400) are rated to pull a 72" finish mower but only a 60" rotary. At some point the rotarys go from a single spindle to dual, which ups the HP requirements.

35 hp for a 15' 3100# batwing? Seems way low to me. I don't find 35hp too much for a 6' mower. Also foot for foot why would a batwings hp requirements be any different than a non batwing. Same rotating mass.

I completely agree.

My take on it is that the hp requirements for a mower ( drag or 3pt ) is not only a hp requirement.. but a general tractor 'size' requirement... IE a higher hp tractor will be bigger or heavier. To that end... a 3pt mower will have a higher requirement, as the tractor will need to be able to lift the mower on the lift. For instance.. a drag mower will have part of the load on the tractors swinging drawbar.. and part of the load on the mowers rear wheels. on a 3pt mower it is possible to lift the mower off the ground.. thus putting all the load on the tractor. My Nh 7610s drives better with my 15' batwing mower ont he back, then with my 10' 3pt mower on the back, and lifted to where it is almost off the ground. interestingly enough.. my 10' mower comes in a drag styel.. and they each list a different hp requirement.. even thought the physical 'deck' is the same, just one has a drag mount.. and hyd tail wheels whereas the 3pt unit has a fixed aframe, and turnbuckle tail wheel adjustments... still.. I think a 35hp tractor pulling a batwing is rather funny. heck.. a 7' mower would be alot ofr a 35 hp tractor..

Anybody have feedback on the John Deere 4720 comfort . It's 50hp with cab and hydro tranny. ? Looks pricey with all the options.
