I learnt both systems at school in the 60s and i assure you metric is by far the easiest and most practicable to use.

One would never talk in fractions of a metric system ie 1/16 of a cm.In fact you are talking about micro metres in this case 625um (micro) or 6250 nm(nano) Im confused because I don’t work in nano engeneering /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I believe it is naïve to think for one minute (60 seconds) or 24hours or 7 day week 365.25 days in a year or a 12 system is easier or simpler than 10 system /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

1 imperial gallon = 4.546
1US gallon =3.785

Vin, I whole heartedly agree. Take chemistry, you will very quickly learn just why the metric system is so much better. Familiarity with the standard or imperial system can be the only reason I can think of as to why one would prefer it over the metric. Add 16 1/2" + 3 3/8" + 14 7/16" + 1 1/8" + 3/32 + 92 1/4" up on a standard calculator, even worse, in your head. It's what we have to do all the time in construction. It's a pain and quite frankly a waste of time. Hopefully we will continue our very slow push to metrics. Our cars are quickly getting there. I know even in Canada where the metric system is supposed to be the standard, inches and feet are still the standard used unless bidding on government jobs. Old habits and ways are hard to break. I'll take the metric system anyday. Feel free to disagree, it's just my opinion.

Who say'd Canadians don't have a sense of humor? That cracked me up. Undersized ehhh! I've been getting a lot of spam that addresses just such a situation. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What makes you think you even need a system of measurement other then a comparison? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( I'll bet the containers were actually 1.75 liters, which is still less than a half gallon - about 1.85 quarts. )

It was nice of you to give them the benefit of the doubt, but alas... my package of Hood ice cream says 1.75 Qrts (1.66L)

So it is nothing more than a price increase disguised as a downsizing. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

look on the bright side, when the containers get so small they can't get any smaller, they might start competing with each other. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( ( Geeks with slide rules may prefer metric but I like inches and feet and miles. It is my understanding there is no longer a "program" to convert the US into a suck up to Europe, could be wrong. Was it Carter that started all that, I forget. J )

Hey! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I resemble that remark. (he says, tongue in cheek). When I graduated high school, my dad made me buy the best slide rule on the market. Since I wanted to be an engineer, he said that I would need it to last the rest of my life. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I still take it out a couple of times a year to make sure I still know how to use it.

I wonder if it can calculate when planting time is next year. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

Isn't it amazing how things have changed. When I was taking Organic and Inorganic chemistry I bought a calculator, all new fangled, Texas Instruments SR71A. Still have it. When I was in highschool my math teacher taught me how to use a slide rule and he like your dad told me I better learn it good cuz it was a skill I would need forever----hmmmmm--well---he meant well--how could he know what was coming /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Another useless skill I have aquired in life to no avail. J

To most Australians, inches, feet and yards, pints and gallons are referred to as imperial measures, I would have thought this is to have gone against the grain of the American people /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Vin, not sure what all that was about but I don't think we call it the Imperial system here. A gallon is a gallon but in Canada it was an Imperial gallon and was a larger quantity. I've always known it as the standard system and some folks have called it the English system but even that needed clarification as there were parts of the English system that were not really adapted here. There is much to be confused about with the standard system which has to harder to learn if not purely for the additional words it takes for each measure. IE., inches , feet, yard, mile vs meter. Or ounces, lbs vs grams. Or fluid ounces, teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, pint, quart gallon vs liter. We use the metric system sporadically as with byte adding the appropriate multiplier, byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte. At any rate, I've got the standard system so engrained in my head that length in inches and weight in pounds are still pretty much all I use.

( Hmm, I wonder if the Gasoline companies are going to convert the pumps over to Metric soon to hide another price increase ??
)

I think that at least here they have already hidden the increase by not lowering the price. It has stagnated at $2.02 for almost a month now (down from $2.09).

Same as all the other 'gas shortage' events. Price goes up and up and up and then down and down but never back to where it was or even close.

There's this ad in the paper's classified-singles dating section-she says her measurements are 79-54-79, now you better hope that is metric unless you are King Kong. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
