Outraged and undersized!

It is still better than in Oz as they also have whitworth. This is a thread pitch that is not metric or SAE and will start on both before binding and stripping the bolt. A real pain as the head sizes are the same or nearly the same. So guess away if you need to replace a bolt or a nut!!!

Gets a lot of getting used to. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Higgy
Each year there is less and less whitworth in oz as the industry around the world moves to metric
I will admit bolts are a pain in the assss, SAE, UNC, UNF, BSW whitworth, BSF, metric, sooner we go all metric the better. Because after all we live in a small village now and we need some universal standard

Yep, instead of raising the price, they downsize the quantity. I've been using a particular size of Hefty garbage bags for the past year and they've always come with 33 bags to the box. I had to buy more today and found that while the box looks identical, and the price was the same, I got 27 bags in a box instead of 33. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif And the metric system didn't have anything to do with it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I commented to the manage at the local super market about the downsizing of the ice cream, and she told me that not only did the package shrink, but the price went up as well. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Same thing with Glad trash bags: same price, fewer bags.

Last night, I noticed the store brands (at least at Giant Eagle and IGA) are still one half gallon. All of the name brands are 1.75 quarts.

I'm sure the store brands will follow the name brands lead in the near future. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( There are more metric wrench sizes that are close together. Is that a 10 or a 9 or an 11 mm ??? In the US SAE wrneches about 4 or 5 cover most things. Unless working on something big. I hate the mixed stuff, is that a 3/8 or an 8, a 7/16 or a 10... mixed SAE/Metric stuff sucks.

"sucks" puts it mildly. The sooner everybody is on the same standard, whatever it may be, the better.

Metric obviously gives more choice

Actually, a Crescent wrench gives more choice. They don't call them " American Metric" for nothing! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yep! And in a pinch, they make a darn good hammer. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Here in oz we call them universals /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

bgott,
Re: Crescent wrenches / Adjsutable Spanners

My father calls them knuckle busters. If you've used one much on a car you don't have to ask why!

I use Crescent or adjustable wrenches, but don't love them. Around here we call them "rounders" or "knuckle busters"

"Metric obviously gives more choice"

Yes it does however when I am working on something, less tool choices are better /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Of course the tool manufactures love the metric sizes, they get to sell you more tools.

Hmmm... maybe the tool manufacturers are behind the mixed Metric/SAE thing so they can sell both sizes of tools.

The length, width, and height on the 1.75 quart containers are still the same as the ½ gallon containers, except on a side view. The 1.75 quart container no longer has the taper in the side, no longer getting larger going towards the top.

If you look at the two containers from a front view, you would never know that the size had changed unless you read the fine print! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

"If you look at the two containers from a front view, you would never know that the size had changed unless you read the fine print! "

It is all about perception rather than truth. That is the root basis for marketing and avertising.

If you check out the sizes for the standard system, the numbers are very close. Go from 4mm to 24mm and you almost have the same number of standard. Starting with 5/32" up to 15/16" including the rarely if ever used anymore 17/32" and 19/32" as well as the often used 11/32" and it's darn close. Once familiar with a vehicle like my VW, it took a 10mm, a 13mm a 17mm, a standard screwdriver and the engine was out.

Rat, your right on the money
Most cars made outside of the us i think now use metric all you need is a 10mm,12mm,and maybe a 18mm spanner and you can pull them all apart, except the Kia, because that never breaks down. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I thought the cars made in the US were metric. My 93 Ford PU seems to be but I have yet to have a reason to work on it. When it does break, I'll let you know if it is using metric or standard /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a 19 mm bolt holding the caliper on my car and no matter how hard I pulled, I couldn't get it off. Unfortunately, my impact sockets are in SAE, not Metric. Even PB Blaster didn't help... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
