Is an over running clutch required with an HST transmission when Bush Hogging? Have read the archives, but still not sure. Use one with my Fergie TO-20.

Probably would not have a need for an over-running clutch if you have the HST transmission. Imagine all HST's have a live PTO setup that can engage, coast, or brake the PTO. Or is there something in particular, i.e. a particular tractor that brings up the question?

I first used an over-running clutch on a TO-30, and it worked great when operating the rotary cutter (relative to not having the OC).

Now have the Deere 4300 HST, and the PTO is independent and live, with three positions - engaged, coasting free, braking

Thanks beenthere - the tractor is a Kubota L3130. It has live PTO and HST. Sounds similar to your JD. Didn't know if I might damage something in the PTO gearing (?), but it evidently works for you. Will try the Bush Hog in a few days direct to the PTO.

Penokee don't know for sure if your PTO uses a brake or not, mine does and I don't like slamming the PTO off after brush hogging. I incrementally bring the RPM down to give the mower a chance to unwind and then I slowly disengage the PTO. I think doing it that way puts a lot less strain on the PTO brake itself.

penokee:

I have used a Bush Hog behind my L3130HST and have not been aware of any problems. I does does not seem to coast as long as behind my old IH444 which was purely mechanical. Since the L3130 uses a oil bath clutch pack there is probably some drag there to slow it down. I do not remember any mention of a brake in the Operators Manual or Service Manual.

I use one on my TC35D to prevent wear on the PTO brake. It's cheap insurance at less than $ 50.00.

I use a overrunning clutch for the same reason, to save wear and tear on PTO brake.

Vince, you don't have an HST /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, but my CK20 has one built in. John

Didnt find I needed one until I got a chipper. The massive flywheel (logically) MUST put a strain on the PTO brake. I got the clutch and, even after idling down, the flywheel spins for a good 30 seconds.

Appreciate all the comments. Ordered one today from agri supply. tc35d swayed my decision - for $50 it's a little more insurance against damaging the PTO. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
