Here http://www.woodsequipment.com/manuals/manuals/Ag/MAN0050.pdf is a link to the manual btw. Pdf Page 17 says:

"Fill gearbox until oil runs out the side plug on gearbox. Check gearbox daily for evidence of leakage, and contact your dealer if leakage occurs."

I expected that the oil would start coming out of the side as soon as the level went above it... perhaps it has to be higher?? The gear box seemed half full when I started filling. Reading the dealer installation instructions on pdf page 36 confuses me even more as to what the level should be.

I pulled up the manual before my first post. It sounds like the dealer removes the original, "solid plug" and adds the vent plug (with teflon tape), therefore, it has to be removable. I imagine the vent plug would have to experience an overpressure of some sort before it would leak, not just a little extra oil. I hope you get it figured out.

I'd say it is about 1/2 in diameter - threaded on the outside. If you look into it, its mostly solid with a wee tiny hole which I would expect the fluid to come out from. I'm not so sure that hole goes all the way into the gearbox now... either that or I am doing something incredibly stupid.

Is there a Square "hole" recessed in the 1/2 " diameter plug?

If so clean out all of the garbage, then use a 1/4" or 3/8" Drive Ratchet , and act as though the Plug in the gear box is a Socket, use the Ratchet to unthread the plug.

Or

Is there a Allen Set screw looking Pipe Plug ?

If so use the appropriate Allen Key and remove plug.

Here is a photo of my gear box. You can see the fill hole and the overflow hole. There is no vent. I use an allen key to unscrew and remove the overflow screw whenever adding to or changing the gear oil.

I have a BB72 and it has a threaded plug removed by an allen key, possibly 10mm.

The owners manual says that I should fill in gear oil until it runs out from the side overflow plug.

So I start filling and filling and filling... no overflow. I check the level just peeking into it and it is definately higher than the overflow plug ... yet I get no overflow.

Can anyone with this type of rotary cutter tell me what I might be missing? Seemed simple enough. Not sure if I should be trying to find a way to suck out the excess gear oil and eye balling it to about the level of the overflow plug?

Huh? I had a BB60 for 4 years (purchased in 2001), and now have a 72. Fill hole (need appropriate sized allen wrench) is on top, and drain hole is on side, about 4-5 inches lower (also needs allen wrench). Remove top and side plugs, ENTIRELY, then put oil (80-90 weight) into top hole (fill hole) until it drains out of side hole. Easy - they both openly communicate with the same cavity. In the years I owned the BB60 (used for heavy duty stuff), it never needed more than an ? ounce of oil - I mean over 4 years. I still checked, every few months, and ended up mopping oil off the side hole whenever I put any in the top hole. What would an overfill do - probably not much unless it was to the top of the cavity and there was no air space for modest oil expansion.

This thread is what happens when a city boy moves to the country and buys a tractor and a bush hog.

An Allen key was what I was missing. I sent woods an email yesterday and they responded to me and got me sorted out within 30 minutes.

All was good once I got the appropriate Allen key used.. and the mess cleaned up.

Thanks all.

Jay, I very much enjoyed your surreptitious turkey baster use. I also utilize anything I can find from the house to experiment with my equipment. I carefully clean it with gojo before it goes back in the drawer though.
