Overfilled with hydraulic oil - should I drain the excess?

CMV: Thanks for the info. I'm pondering whether/when to drain and filter and/or replace hydraulic fluid for both. I'm going to take your advice, pick up a quarts or two, and top off both for the time being.

DieselBound: I though it was just me seeing things, but it happened twice. It is indeed very weird. I can only imagine it having something to do with changing pressure once you pull the dipstick out, but that's just speculation.

Update: I recently changed my front axle oil. The dipstick was reading just a spec of oil at the tip. I drained 7 quarts out, replaced with 6 quarts of gear oil, and now my dipstick reads oil level right in the middle. I have been checking it semi-neurotically ever since, but it seems to be staying at this level. It's very strange.

In the middle should be safe.
Over the top could cause seals to fail but don't fret it as long as you stay 'in operating range'.
What does your owner's manual say?

Changed the hydraulic oil on the CK35 HST and overfilled it. The manual says the capacity is 7.93 gal, so I poured in 8 qallons for good measure. Checked the dipstick and it shows about 1.5" above maximum. Will the excess oil hurt anything or should I drain some out? I haven't run the tractor yet except for a few minutes. Right now I am leaning towards draining the excess and save the oil for the next oil change in 400 hours. What say you? Thanks!

Wouldn't care. Any excess will pump itself out through the dipstick. Fear not, Pilgram.

I wouldn't worry about it

FWIW

I overfilled mine as well. And it wasn't pumping out of the dipstick hole. Fearing overpressure and damage I drained the excess. My ZTM has an overflow tank for when the fluid heats up. Kioti should do that.

Also since it's so hard to see the clean oil on that **** dipstick I got some fluid dye from John Deere dealer and dyed it red. I should have only used half the dye and added it to the fluid before change Instead I poured it into the filler neck), but live and learn
