Hello,

I have a McCormick 125 and the gauge says that it is overheating. I changed the thermostat and it still run hot. A mechanic checked several points on the tractor with a interred gun and nothing showed over 160. He suggested changing out the temperature sending unit. It now shows the temperature in the red instead of just below the red.
Any ideas of what it could be? Radiator doesn't seem plugged. Could the gauge be bad? Can I put a different gauge on it? Water pump bad?

It's not boiling over and the thermal reading is 160F, the temperature indication system has failed. If anything the engine is too cold to cleanly burn the fuel. Should be at least 195F. What temp stat did you install?

Before going any farther make sure you've carefully cleaned the radiator. They make condenser cleaner spray that you can buy at the big box stores, but a hose is really all you need. If it's still showing hot after you're sure the radiator is clear, then I'd start to figure out a way to put another gauge, or replace the temperature sensing unit. It shouldn't require a colder thermostat to run at the proper temperature.
