Overheating problem

Anyone have a suggestion on an overheating problem I'm having on my '83 Yanmar YM165D? It keeps boiling over and forcing the coolant out the overflow after running for about 10 minutes. Seems to run fine, but I don't want to smoke the engine. No thermostat, no water pump! What do I do?

I had the same problem with my Yanmar. Unfortunately, I smoked my engine and had to rebuild it. Do a search for overheating on this site. You will find a wealth of information. Look at this link for suggestions also:

Thanks, Sailor Bob. I think I'm going to pull the radiator and take in to a rad. rapair shop to have it flushed and rodded and pressure checked. Hopefully that will increase the flow and take care of it....we'll see.

That is a good idea. Also, you might want to check the radiator cap. It could be weak. On mine it needs to be about 12 or 13 lb cap. A 72 Datsun 510 will work. My real problem turned out to be a blown head gasket. I let it go too long and it got too hot. If i had just replaced the head gasket I could have probably gone without the rebuild.

Wow, SailorBob, that info on the link you sent is amazing....I've been using 50/50 antifreeze. I will try the lesser mixture and see what happens. I showed the info to my mech friend and he was amazed that there is no water pump in this water-cooled system. He had never heard of that before.

hello Hacienda Esperanza,

while the radiator is off, do yourself a favor and Flush the engine block coolant area with a garden hose that has a nozzle on it. do top and bottom inlets several times.

I recently did radiator repair on mine, $54.50 was what the repair and a gallon of antifreeze cost me. i did flush the engine block at that time, and it took 15 or 20 minutes before clear water ran through. keep switching from top to bottom to loosen all the "Gras Dous" for a good flush.

oh, i pre-measured coolant before adding = 1/2 gallon anti-freeze 1 gallon water should top her off.
Pre-Mixing coolant before adding it to tractor is a good idea since we have have no water pump to circulate coolant for mixing.

edit: "Gras Dous" speal'un chould be ""GRAS DEUX" , get ur dunn !!! I thunk,....
