Mowing Overrunning clutch for Finish Mower

I just got tired of being pushed into the deck on the house and the trees out back. Best $39 I ever spent. Get the slip pin type instead of the roll pin type unless you plan to leave it on all the time.

Got my chance to use the finish mower for the first time today and did so without an overrunning clutch (contrary to all of the advice). I mainly skipped it because I will have to cut down the PTO shaft to fit it between the tractor and mower, so I thought I give it a try in the open to see what would happen....

....nothin'.

I didn't get any push or anything. As soon as I pressed the clutch, the PTO rapidly lost speed and stopped with 3 or 4 seconds, maybe less. During that time, the tractor just sat still (I tried it several times on purposed while in the open part of the yard before actual beginning to mow). I decided to mow without and had no problems.

I definately agree with Reed, though...the installation of the clutch will make shifting gears easier. I will probably break down and cut off the PTO shaft soon and put the clutch on (I've got one of the clip-on models from Agri-Supply, so it's no big deal).

P.S. - How on earth did I get by all these years without a finish mower? I usually push mow for about 2 1/2 hours, now I'm down to an hour of finish mowing and 1/2 hour of pushing (for trimming purposes).

Yap exactly what my experiance i don't have any extra movement from the drive side. only shifting gears..

I pondered that one, too. My future sees a lot of natural areas, gardens, shrubs, etc. and only enough grass to cut with a weedeater!
My wife says I'll have to get rid of the tractor when I finish with all of the natural areas and have no grass, She says I won't need it any more.... yeah, right!

When we built our second house ( the one we are in now ), I made it so that there is only about 1/2 hour of mowing and weadeating to maintain the 'yard', and the rest is pasture. Sometimes I even cheat too, by letting the horses in the yard and let them eat it down a bit.

I tried to let some of my front yard go to pasture but the boss gets on me. The roadbed is elevated and the slope into my front yard is about 45 degrees from the road edge to about 8-11 feet into my yard. It's about a 200 foot stretch. Weed-eating sucks, takes a push-mower forever to keep rpm's up without bogging down. The state mows 5 feet of the drop and leaves the rest for me. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I can't use round-up because I need something to hold the bank together. So, now here's the chaser.... what should I do? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif let the grass grow 8 feet high.... work my tail off every week to keep it cut.... or just sit back and have a cold one? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is a better alternative--convince the wife she needs the exercise. Then you can sit back and have a cold one while you watch.

Get animals that eat grass. fence your property line.. even electric wire / brait on step in tposts will work. Get sheep or goats.. etc.. You will then only have to mow, saw a few feet off your fence, and then weed-eat the fenceline to keep the e-fence strong... le tthe animals do the rest. If you really have that much grass where it grows that fast... make money off of it in the form of animal sales.

Just last night, we lef the horses in the 'front yard', and in 1 night, they nocked out about 1/4 to 1/3 of the mowning I need to do this weekend. I'm going to put them up all this week... hopefully by sunday I'll only have to weedeat!

I'm getting ready to put a bush/brush/rough cut mower on my 1401d. Is there any particular overrunning clutch you guys would recommend? Can I just go to Northern Tool or Tractor Supply and get what I need?

I probably shouldn't respond to my own post, but I found an overrunning clutch at Agri-Supply for around $37...I suppose it's a quick disconnect? I can't send the PDF, but if you try www.agri-supply.com and do a search for overrunning clutch, you'll get a PDF with their catalog info...page 3 has the clutches.

Can someone tell me the difference in the slip clutch and the overunning clutch/coupler? I know my tiller has a slip clutch, but what purpose does it serve, as opposed to the overrunning clutch?
