Overrunning Clutch vs. Live PTO

I am about three weeks away from purchasing a B7500. After much research I have determined this is the tractor for me. I only have one more decision to make, get the DT model with a standard transmission and overrunning PTO clutch or get the HST with hydrostatic and Live PTO.

Can someone please explain to me the differences between the overrunning clutch vs. the live PTO?

I don't think the HST transmission is worth the extra $1500.00 I have been quoted. But if the rear mower stops each time I change gears on the DT then it would be worth it to get the HST/Live PTO.

I've never owned a hst, but I can give you my 2 cents worth on the live/non live PTO issue. Yes, if you disengage the clutch on the over running pto equipped tractor, the PTO wll cease to be driven, but not immediately stopped. The momemtum of the driven implement will continue to turn the shaft until the gear change is complete and the clutch is engaged again. This could be an inconvenient factor if you plan to change directions frequently with your implement under heavy load (such as brushogging overgrown areas), but to a lesser extent if you spend most of the time in one gear without clutching (such as straight line mowing). Your majority use of the PTO implements has a great deal of bearing on your need for a live PTO but if you will be using a mower or brushog a lot, I would think you would be much more satisfied with the live PTO.

Does the B7500DT have a two stage clutch? That might negate the need for an over running clutch. But personally, I think you'll be making a mistake if you don't get the HST model.

The overrunning clutch is there to stop the tractor from being driven by the implement if it is operating properly. For another 2 cents We do't order DT's in that size unless paid in advance.

Not clear what uses the tractor will be used for, HST is much nicer for stop and go work, changing directions often and ...especially....if you are going to do any FEL work. Went from standard transmission to HST 2 years ago and would not go back.

I Would go for the live PTO. This allows you to raise an an implement such as a post hole auger. tiller or mower without engaging the blades or auger. A non live PTO requires the PTO shaft to be spinning to raise or lower the implement. I would also recommend the HST. The HST will let you change direction or slow down just that little bit when mowing a thicker/taller area with out changing gears or slowing the throttle when you may really need to increase the throttle and slow the ground speed to cut the thick spots.

I'm just moving up to a B7500 HSD should take delivery this week! I'm going from a John Deere with hydro to the Kubota with Hydro. The dealer I bought mine from don't even stock the DT model! When I was looking at the different models I called Carver Equipment and they were very helpfull and said they would go with the HSD. After having the hydro in the JD I didn't even look for the DT. The extra $$ is well worth it! Also it would help resale value in the future.
