PA Amish Cabinet Mfg/Makers Know Any??????

Along the back roads where their farmhouses were located every so many miles you'd see a (pay) phone booth in a field out near the road. It wasn't inside or part of anyone's home so we figured they justified it as necesssary for doing business and earning a living. Haven't been back in a long time so wonder if they are still there since most phone booths/pay phones have been removed over the past years.

The family my wife visited had an "outhouse" situated in farm yard about as far from the house as a true outhouse would be. It was their telephone booth, and as you figured it was justified as a necessity for carrying out their business.

Also saw one time a farmer making hay. A four horse hitch pulling a contraption with a gas engine driving a sickle-bar mower. It's against their beliefs to use a gas engine for transportation.
They have their beliefs but they're not totally impractical!

I will just add this about the Amish, as far as I know they do not participate in the social security system and even though their belief system may seem a bit "odd" for us non-Amish folk I think they are way ahead of a lot of us in survival on the planet. From what I have seen they are competent and talented craftsmen that don't have the burden of the "system" on their shoulders. Hats off to them for sticking to their principles. If our government had done the same with the constitution we all would be better off.

this may be old but could you PM me with an Amish cabinet builder. I only need one cabinet made. I live in West Chester Pa. Lancaster is not far from me at all but I don't think just driving around Lancaster yelling out my window is a good option. Thanks

I have done business with the Amish in PA and I do business with the Amish community about fifteen minutes from where I live now. I just stop at an Amish business and start asking people where to go find whatever I need. I find that while the Amish may have ways that may seem backwards to "us" but they are not stupid nor ignorant of "our" world.

For instance, I dropped off a starter to be rebuilt at an Amish business that does that sort of work (who'da thunk it?). While there, a helicoptor flew over. The gentleman offerred that they had been flying around all day. No big powerlines in the area so I said, do you know what they are looking for? To which he replied, "oh yes".

Approach the Amish like you would (should) approach a horse with your eyes somewhat down so don't seem a threat or a superior. Make eye contact when you shake hands. Lastly, the Amish depend a great deal on selling their wares or services. But by all means, do your homework and go over all aspects you are contracting for.

I went through this a few years ago and actually found one online. We ordered a quarter cut oak sleigh entertainment center. I was skeptical after 1500 dollars or so, but it exceeded our expectations. All dove tail joints, and every gap is perfect. My wife and I plan on buying more from them. The top is over 1.0" thick and absolutely no veneers! I ordered clear glass, rather than the smoke. Its all made to order, in different woods and stains. Heirloom quality for sure.
