I found this HOWSE 5ft. brush hog on Ebay. The seller lives in the next town over. Since I have one but my nieghbor who borrows mine all the time doesen't, and needs one he paid $40.00 for it. So we are going to pick it up after dinner. It will need some welding done to it and new blades and paint. And we just need to find a replacement for the front half of the PTO shaft. The last owner lost it. Anyone know where or how to make up the front half cheap?

Von,

Nice find. I've been looking all over for a used one. A seller I spoke to with a used Howse 5 ft. hog was insulted when I offered $400.

Therefore, nice deal Von!

P.S.

1) I ended up with a new Walco 5 ft hog. So far, so good.

2) TSC has PTO drivelines and driveline parts.

Von,

About any good tractor dealer should be able to help you out for the PTO shaft. They are pretty standard. Though you might wind up having to cut it to length. I'd recommend replacing the whole thing. Just guessing though, you'll have more in the PTO shaft than in the brush hog. Not sure there is a cheap for this item.

If you can't easily find the parts you need locally, why not just contact Howse for them?

You can't go wrong with that deal. Heck I've got about $400 in the tw72 Rhino that I bought a couple of months back and I thought that was a pretty good deal. But mine did come with a set of new blades, slip clutch and entire pto shaft./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif But the down side was it came with no chain guards. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I attached a pic of the Rhino.

Looks good.

What do u reckon has caused the circular paint removal on the TOP of the deck?

Hi Von,

I'd hook up another PTO driveshaft and test this unit first before you start ordering things...

From the looks of the deck... the blades were wobbling underneath and hitting it... usually happens when the fasteners loosen up holding the gearbox in place and sometimes after you bend the gearbox output shaft...

Put some gearbox oil in it and test for leaks from the bottom seal... especially if the shaft is bent... those shafts could cost almost as much as a new gearbox...

I would think anyone that owned this and accepting only $40. for it... knew its hidden problems... /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif

About the only way those marks can get there is if the blades are hitting the deck from underneath. I would also want to find out just what caused this before (as suggested by JMIII) investing any more money. Something is mighty loose to do this.

May have been a bent blade sometime in the past

Yoooouch........ something looks kinda rough there. I'd definately do as John says before spending any $$$$ on it. The condition of it makes me wonder if the pto shaft grenaded. If so then yes,he did technically loose it I guess.
