Pain in the backache - your remedy?

/ Pain in the backache - your remedy? #51
I hurt my back the first time almost thirty years ago. I bush hogged a huge wasp nest, getting 22 stings. I jumped off the tractor, running in the air like Wile E Coyote. But like Wile E Coyote, I had some trouble with my landing. My feet couldn't keep up with the rest of me and I went face first into the ground. The hard landing twisted my back so bad I forgot the wasp stings.

Over the years I have had many relapses. Some from tying my boots. Sometimes I don't know what caused it.

Many of the ideas already listed have worked for me as well. If it is real bad, I lay on the floor and put my feet in a chair. I have found that walking helps as well. My sister has one of the inversion things, and I have used it a time or two.

But all back pain is not created equal. What works for me might not work for someone else.

I bought a small 9 volt EMS unit online (Electro muscle stimulator) for when my back/neck tightens up. It has two adhesive electrodes that you stick to the skin on either side of the tight back/neck muscle and sends electrical pulses that causes the strained back muscles to contract and relax really quickly. In about 3-4 minutes, the cramped back muscles will start to "release"/relax. It has many adjustable settings (if you turn it up too high it becomes painful).

Otherwise, I have found it best to stay as active as possible rather than sitting around and babying my back. It seems like the more I move around (walking and doing light work) the better my back feels.

I have never had any nerve/disk issues- so my method is likely just for muscle strains.

Good Gracious. How did I forget the TENS unit! Yes, this little device works. Our Bone Cracker sold us one years ago and I was skeptical but it works. They wifey had two shoulder surgeries and the Doc at a major teaching university has her patients outfitted with a TENS unit as part of the recovery. It does help reduce pain.

Just be dang careful with the dial that sets the strength of pulses. IT CAN LIGHT YOU UP!:shocked::shocked::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Hi Dan,

What KYDan (interesting handle- tho, since the screen names here are self chosen, why would a guy pick sex lube??- :)- kidding) is talking about is similar, but different.

TENS= Transcutaneous (thru da skin) Electronic NERVE Stimulation interrupts pain transmission like static from a bad motor interrupts your radio or TV signal. It seems to help any kind of pain, but nerve and joint pain are its forte.

EMS= Electrical Muscle Stimulator (mine was sold as a massage unit) directly stimulates muscles causing them contract rhythmically but uncontrollably and wears them out, to break up the static contraction we call a muscle spasm. In doing so it relaxes the muscle, which decreases the pain from spasm, but doesn't directly affect the pain.

Both work well, but for different things.

Thomas

I did not realize there were two of these self shockers.:laughing::laughing:

We have both then, the Bone Cracker sold us the EMS and the surgeon gave us the TENS. The wifey has used both but I have only used the EMS unit. The EMS does pulse which is kinda odd to feel but it does remove the pain.

Just don't hit that wheel that adjust the power...:laughing::laughing: Amazing how that little 9v battery will launch you like a rocket. :D:D:D

I once heard a joke about a woman trying to find Kentucky Jelly but this is a family site and I can't remember the whole joke anyway.:laughing::laughing:
