Please share opinions about which brand is better than the other.
Maybe this is a Chevy-Ford question?

I'm a fan of Rustoleum for painting metal. Second choice is POR-15, especially for areas that will never see a second coat in the future, (like a truck/trailer frame).

For me, Rustoleum in spray cans or quarts seems to cover much better (more titanium dioxide) in it, I presume plus the color match on my Kubota's is much better. Used to use the Majic stuff but switched to Rustoleum a couple years ago. Dries quicker too. Of course today, none of it is a cheap date. The cans went from 6 bucks to nine bucks recently.

Forklift so it will be out in the sun. I've used Majic years ago but seem to see more complaints about it in recent years. I assume hardener is worth the money? I'll buy a gallon of paint.

I would prefer Rustoleum.

For something "important" I like PPG AUE 300. It's what I used one the DIY L33200 cab, snowblower, a rear blade and a few other thingsd.

For other things I've had OK luck with both Majic and Rustoleum 2-part paint.

EDIT TO ADD - At work we had a few projctes where we used Tenmec (forget the exact product). IIRC, it was slow drying and held up extremely well. We used it on structural stuff, so I'm not sure how nice a finish can be achieved on nice metal.

I have found Rustoleum in quarts or gallons seems to be higher in solids, so it covers better than Majic. To spray it I thin it down with enamel reducer and add a little bit of hardener.

Rustoleum also has a distinctly different smell and Majic but I do use their hardener in the Rustoleum.

Quality of any paint directly hinges on the amount of Titanium Dioxide in it, why it's the first thing I look at when buying any paint and that includes Latex as well. The higher the content, the better it 'hides'.

The higher the VOC’s in the paint the better coverage and longer lasting
Last year I purchased a few gallons of RustOleum to paint my 20 x 40 old pole barn, those gallons had a VOC component of 450, this year that same paint is no longer available in my state plus 12 other states.
The paint that is available now in my state has a VOC of 400
I guess time will tell how the lower VOC paints will hold up especially to weathering

If you're talking rattle cans, I really like the original Rustoleum product, in the white can with the circle logo and the colored cap. I think just about every other product they've introduced in the 30 years since is basically garbage that doesn't come out as nice, or clogs the spray tip when the can is less than half emptied, but whoever invented their original product seemed to know their stuff.

The only other rattle can I'll use is the Valspar Tractor and Implement series stuff, which actually goes on pretty nice and is very durable. But those are one-use cans. Never count on them spraying well if you store them a year or three after initial use, no matter how you try to clear the nozzle after use.

I think one of the problems with a lot of the newer products is that they're designed to spray at all angles. This defeats your ability to clear the nozzle by inverting the can, for all who know that old trick. In fact, I see they're now even marketing the original Rustoleum product as "sprays all angles", so maybe we're all doomed.

I have a gallon of Majic I bought at Tractor Supply. It was the slowest drying paint I've ever used. Only dried when I warmed the piece on the gas grill. Rust-oleum for me

Big preference here as well on using Rustoleum over Majic. Painted some farm implements with both. The Majic just did not bond as well and had way more noticeable fading then the rustoleum. Used Valspar as well and really like that paint as well. More so then even rustoleum. Ran a couple gallons of it to paint a livestock trailer though a HF airless sprayer and it worked awesome. No reducing or multiple passes. Only downside is it seems it goes through way more paint and you still have quite a bit of paint left in the can when you'll start to suck air and lose prime.

Did OP specify application method? I've done quite a bit of machinery and implement painting, mostly HVLP or even old-school spray (LVHP? :D), as well as rattle can and brush, and my brand preferences vary with application method. If buying quarts or gallons, I'd put the Valspar Tractor and Implement Enamel, also sold under countless other brand names, at the top of the list. But if rattle can, I'd stick with the Rustoleum original product I recommended in post #11.

I tried the Magicc years ago when TSC switched over to it from Valspar. It was absolute crap.
Same here.

Majic is crap. When TSC used to carry the Valspar tractor and implement paint, it was good stuff. Especially paired with their hardner.

They switched to Majic about 10 years ago and tried it a few times. Absolutly could not get the stuff to cover even over primer without a million runs. And that was painting international red over red oxide primer.

Between TSC and Rural king.....one (or both) now carry the rustoleum Farm and implement paint. And I like it as well as the old valspar stuff. Covers well and cures hard when using a hardner.

I will never buy a Majic product again

I gotta go across the border and get some paint. Stupid environmental laws here in Canada. I couldn't even find paint anywhere for my Allis. Just wanted rattle cans or a quart to do all the parts when I installed my new rear rims until I can get it professionally painted and I couldn't find anything here.

Peavey Mart (our TSC) used to always have all kinds of implement paint, now nothing on the shelves. And Tremclad (now owner by Rustoleum) is like water.

A one gallon can of oil based Tremclad ranges from $84 to $93 here now!!!

I need to find either Persian Orange #1 or NEW Kubota orange.

I have noticed that rustoleum sprayed with a HVLP gun over there rusty metal primer lasts longer than there spray cans. As for the Magic brand idk.

Probably due entirely to dry film thickness, as many don’t thin as far for HVLP as rattle can. More coats with the rattle can will get you there.

If a big job, HVLP is always easier, but there’s clean-up time to consider. Rattle can gets the small jobs done, but requires more coats for same DFT.
