I originally got both the Chrysler red, and the Krylon Banner Red to test for my 1301D. Sprayed some of both on the inside of the hood. The Chrysler red was a really nice color, but didn't match well. The Krylon was much closer. The finish came out really nice. I think I used 3 cans on the hood, but I painted the inside as well as the outside.

I used the Chrysler red to paint my son's bicycle - he loved it!

I poped in on your site to look at your 1301D, the hood looks like it's been painted are the pic's taken before or after you painted it with the krylon paint?...looks good by the way

The pics were taken after I painted the hood with the Krylon, but it has been sitting outside for about a year without any attention. I didn't wash or wax it or anything before I took the pictures. I need to paint the rest as it has faded and doesn't match the hood, but I haven't had a chance to get to it as I have been concentrating on getting the 3pt put on. The 3pt is finished and on, but I haven't painted the top link bracket yet. I need to use it to plow potatoes before I take it back off for some paint.

I'll try to get some pics once I get the top link bracket painted and back on. Its also time to take the belly mower off and put the front blade on, so I'll wait untill I've got the blade on to take the pics.

I let my wife pick out the red for our 186D. I really didn't care to get an exact match - and she is very particular about her red's. There is nothing worse than the wrong red.

She picked Banner Red.

Thanks for the info, here's some pic's of my future painting job

The grass is slowing down and I don't use the tractor much over the winter (if that is what you call it here in fla.) so I plan on painting this thing over the winter. Some question for you guy's out there that have painted tractors before.

(1) I'm not bad with a rattle can or my Wanger 305E spray gun and I'm going to call Wanger today see if the little spray gun will will be able to do this kind of painting I've only used it for staining decks and fencing any comments ???

(2) I'll take off the sheet metal to paint but what if I want to paint the motor and body what kind of prep. is involved in that. sheet metal is one thing but all the nooks and cranys of a frame and motor maybe just a little over my head. Does the frame and motor need to be primed before painting?

(3) If I do paint the frame and motor, do I just use a gloss black engine enamial <sp?>

(4) Anyone have a clue on a close match for the off white for the grill and rims

my other thought is just towing to to the local tractor shop and cough up my hard earned cash and say "here you paint the thing" /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Whiskey, I wouldn't paint that tractor. At most , just wash, touch-up, and wax. Engine enamel would work well on the black, and fercryinoutloud put a seat on the poor thing. You will never get anywhere near the quality of the original paint with a rattle can, or anything else for that matter.

For the off-white color on Yanmar tractors, I have found Dupli-color's Wimbelton White to be a close match. I obtained my paint (spraycan) from Autozone, but I have also seen the paint at Wal-mart in the Auto Department. At Autozone, they carry the spraycan in a larger size which is a better value.

I think I have to agree with others. Don't paint the sheet metal! I would bet that a good wash and wax would bring that paint up to a beautiful shine. Unless there is some rust that is not visible in your photo, I wouldn't paint it. I painted my hood and other parts around the hood because there were some really bad rust spots 4-5" in diameter and larger.

The engine and frame is another story, though even there, unless there is rust - I wouldn't do it. It looks like the paint coverage on the engine is pretty good. Again, I would just try to give it a good wash - water and mild soap under the hood won't hurt a thing. If you have some really grungy places - use some of that engine cleaner gunk. Even some enamel thinner/reducer can be used for the really hard to clean areas. It shouldn't hurt the paint since it is a laquer based paint. The thinner will get the oil/grease off, but leaves the dirt behind, so you'll have to get the soap and water out to get the dirt - maybe even with a toothbrush.

I may be off the conventional wisdom here a bit because I have painted all of my Yanmars that I have owned. I paint them because I wanted to stop any rust that was occurring and to generally keep it in good-looking condition. I like many people try to just keep my stuff clean and well kept.
Here is a photo of a little 1610D that I painted with a rattle can. I think good results can be had with spray cans. If the user is careful with the prep work and apply the paint according to the directions, good results can be had.
I painted the entire tractor, frame, body and loader. it took me a couple of weekend nights because I sanded all of the rust and primer all bare metals.
Perhaps I went overboard a bit on "just" a tractor, but again, I care about maintaining my equipment.
