I have a 26' x 36' old metal pole barn that has corrugated galvanized siding. My guess is the barn was built in the 60s. It has never been painted and some of the panels are beginning to show some surface rust. Also the metal roof is totally rusted which gives it a nice red/rust appearence. My wife recently announced she wants the barn painted a forest green color. What type of paint should I consider using and is spraying the best method? What about the rust? Is there any paint that can be put directly on over the rust or must the rust be thoroughly removed first (that will be one heck of a job)? How do you remove the rust, especially on the roof. Please give me some guidance as I am new at all these maintenance issues.

Thanks

I used FIBERED ALUMINUM ROOF COATING on my 2 barns with great success. Just made sure it was clean and applied one coat to stop rust and give the roof a good coat. The first coat on one barn lasted 20 years before I re-coated it. Here is a link to
The Brewer Company. Their products are sold at many places. Roof coatings are near bottom of page.
The side walls will require some other type of paint. If the galvanized siding is corroded and rusted it will require some prep work. I'm sure someone will post how they have painted their metal barn.

I painted my barn's galvanized roof two years ago. It was rusting in a few spots. I made sure it was clean (power washing) but did not attempt to sand or prime the rust. I just gave it two coatings of spray coat. Next time I paint the roof I will try brushing it on. I can still see the spray swirls and a few places I missed.

I used Agway roofing paint. This paint went on well and it appears to be holding up well these last couple of years.

hmm, want it green, wimmen sure are picky /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

TSC has some metal roofing primer and paint. Not tried it although it is what I plan to use for the same type of situation.
I had planned on getting it done this year, but have back surgery coming up so.....

Another thought, I have had really good luck with Rustoleum Rusty metal primer, although it is about $25 a gallon, that and a good oil based topcoat might work well.
