Painting a Pipe Fence

Spiker, you probably know - but the only rust preventer from Rustoleum is their "Rusty Metal Primer", others are just top coats or regular primers.

I wouldn't paint it. Heavy wall pipe will outlast you unpainted and looks good natural I think. My neighbor built a bunch of pipe fence and painted it white. Looks great but he has to redo it every few years as the paint flakes off and the dark spots stick out like a sore thumb.

If you insist on painting I would go with a color that is close to rusty pipe so that when (not if but when) the paint starts chipping away it won't look like crap unless you plan on repainting every few years. If it is just something small like a gate and entryway maybe repainting isn't such a big deal but I have close to a mile of pipe fence and there is no way I would want to have to redo it every few years.

I guess wither to paint or not would be based on where you live, arid or not. Out west very few paint piping fence. My property is well over half piping fence, drill piping mostly. Been up ~10 years or more, thought about painting just for looks but do not think it would help or hurt longevity. If it is a small patch or just a gate I'd paint it just for looks.
