If it's an implement that's works well I paint it OEM, other wise it gets whatever paint color is in the OOPS paint section at Home Depot.

Any ol' paint'll do, so long as it's the original color, with the original decals. Both these plows are from the late 1950's. A really good second paint job may see them through 'till their 100th year. Did I mention I hate to paint?

Very Nice!!!

Do you work these after restoring?

POR is good stuff but it is not resistent to UV. It is great for a frame or undercarrage that dosen't see direct light. It needs a cover coat to protect it from deteriorating from sunlight.

ABSOLUTELY! The Deere plow probably has plowed around 25 or 30 acres since rebuild. The Massey plow hasn't hit dirt YET, but that's coming soon. In the last couple years I've repainted just about all my equipment....tractors and all. It's that "semi-retired" thing I suppose.

Farmwithjunk,
That is a nice Deere plow. I would like to find one like it for myself. Do you think I could pull it with my 790 MFWD? It has R1 ag tires and rear wheel weights, no tire fluid though. I could put some weight in the FEL or take the FEL off and add front end weights.

Plowing was one of my favorite jobs on the farm. We used to fall plow with 4 rigs all IH of course. 4586 with 8-18, 3588 (2+2) with 6-18, 1486 with 6-16, and a 1456 with 6-16, Fuel and labor was cheap back in those days. We had one field that was 1 mile through. That was quite a sight with all of those rigs together. I wish I had the sense to take some pictures of that :(

That question could be best answered by another 790 owner. Not sure how one would handle a 2-bottom plow in average conditions.

Deere plows, especially those made back in the 1950's and earlier are known to pull harder than most other brands. Look at one side-by-side with a Ford or Massey mounted plow and you'll see the leading edge of each share is set at a more abrupt angle. The moldboards are shorter, and the shin's cutting edge has less "rake". They tend to have trouble with sod, wanting to roll it over too far (back to "green side up"), and have much less trash clearance under and between the beams. Corn stalks tend to plug them up. That is why I have TWO 2-bottom plows in the barn when the pictures were shot. The Deere is sold and I'm going to use the MF plow exclusively from now on.
